Upon falling, a tree releases items (such as wood or seeds) in the area where the upper part of it impacts the ground. The direction of its fall thus becomes particularly important near bodies of water, since all items that fall into water disappear forever. Rings like the [[Magnet Ring]] are very useful when chopping trees, as they allow the player to pick up items within a wider radius, reducing the need to cut obstacles to get to the fallen wood.

Stardew Valley author Concerned Ape [https://twitter.com/ConcernedApe/status/711010819861970944 has confirmed on Twitter] that trees do not regrow from a stump, contrary to a common opinion. Thus, it is generally useful to clear the land of a stump to make it available for any planting, which also requires new seed.  Alternatively, it may be useful to chop down trees growing outside [[The Farm]] but leave the stumps intact if foraging or searching for [[Artifact Spot]]s, so that a large area can be seen at a glance without the need to walk behind each tree.

For maximum growth, common tree seeds are best planted in the center of a clear 3x3 grid.  If other objects occupy this grid, the tree may not grow.  If a fully grown tree is adjacent to a seed/sapling, the seed/sapling will not grow beyond a sapling. During the winter season, seeds do not sprout and there is no tree growth.  A properly planted seed has approximately a 20% chance of growing to the next stage each day during [[Spring]], [[Summer]], or [[Fall]], or in the [[Greenhouse]].
