They can be activated in the same way as [[Secret Notes]], by selecting it in the top row of inventory and right-clicking (as if consuming food). This will add the scrap to the player's collection.
The [[Magnifying Glass]] is not needed to obtain or use Journal Scraps, although once found they are contained on the same collection page as Secret Notes.
Note that unlike Secret Notes, Journal Scraps are always found in order (''i.e.,'' the first journal scrap found will always be Journal Scrap #1, the second Journal Scrap #2, etc.).
If a Journal Scrap is not activated after getting it, the player may get the same Journal Scrap repeatedly.
Journal Scraps can be gifted, but they are all [[Friendship#Universal Hates|universally hated]].

|On rainy days a Mermaid will appear on the large rock by the shore. If the player places [[Flute Block]]s and tunes them to play the [[Night Market#Mermaid Boat|Mermaid's song]], she will reward them with 5 [[Golden Walnut]]s.

To play the Mermaid's song, place a [[Flute Block]] on top or below each set of stones on the shore, then tune each block by the amount of stones. A large stone symbolizes 5, and a small stone symbolizes 1. After tuning all 5 blocks, simply run past each one from left-to-right. Note that the player does not need to have read the journal scrap to do this.

|On a rainy day, go to the southeast area of the island. There will be a flute block icon in the sand next to stones. Place one flute block on each arrangement of stones for a total of 5 blocks. Change the pitch of each flute block according to the number represented by the stones: small stones equal 1 and large stones equal 5. The first flute block should be clicked 1 time to get to the second pitch, the second clicked 10 times for the 11th pitch, and so on. Then run past all flute blocks to receive 5 golden walnuts from the mermaid.
