It can be tempting to stick around and explore a level, but in reality it is always better to go down as soon as you see a ladder or hole (after collecting and visible rare drops you need like [[iridium]]).
The reason for this is that we're trying to reach the lowest level possible. We're trying to reach the lowest level possible because the chances of rare drops like [[iridium]] go up every level you go down.
