This article is about the non-fruit trees. For Fruit Trees, see the Fruit Trees page.

Trees that do not yield fruit are of two types: common, and special. Full-grown common trees yield sap when tapped, or wood when felled by an axe. Felling leaves behind a tree stump, which can also be harvested by an axe for a smaller amount of wood. After you acquire the Foraging 1 skill, felling also produces some of the tree's own seed. A properly planted seed normally takes 10 to 12 days to mature, though a tree does not grow in winter. Special trees have some other unique properties.

Common Trees

Three varieties of common trees grow on the farm and within Stardew Valley. Their sap may be used to produce syrup via a Tapper, and their wood has many uses, including constructions, buildings, tools, weapons, and crafts.

To chop down a tree, simply hit it repeatedly with the axe until it falls. A felled tree always falls sideways (left or right), never up or down. When the player is at its left or right, it falls away from the player. When the player is in front or behind, it falls to the side away from where the player approached the tree (needs confirmation). So if the player came originally from the left, it falls right, and vice versa.

Upon falling, a tree releases items (such as wood or seeds) in the area where the upper part of it impacts the ground. The direction of its fall thus becomes particularly important near bodies of water, since all items that fall into water disappear forever. Rings like the Magnet Ring are very useful when chopping trees, as they allow the player to pick up items within a wider radius, reducing the need to cut obstacles to get to the fallen wood.

Stardew Valley author Concerned Ape has confirmed on Twitter that trees do not regrow from a stump, contrary to a common opinion. Thus, it is generally useful to clear the land of a stump to make it available for any planting, which also requires new seed.

For maximum growth (in 10-12 days), common tree seeds are best planted in an area that is clear within a two-tile radius (at the center of a 5x5 square of tiles). If other objects occupy the outer ring of the square, the growth rate is reduced. If another tree is adjacent to a seed, it will not grow beyond a sapling. During the winter season, seeds do not sprout and there is no tree growth.

Once a tree is fully grown, its surrounding area can be paved without ill effects, although the paving will prevent the tree from dropping seeds.

Maple Tree

Maple Trees grow from Maple Seeds. When tapped, they yield Maple Syrup every 7-8 days. Maple trees have a chance to drop a Hazelnut during Fall.

Oak Tree

Oak Trees grow from Acorns. When tapped, they yield Oak Resin every 6-7 days.

Pine Trees grow from Pine Cones. When tapped, they yield Pine Tar every 4-5 days.

Special Trees

Special trees have uncommon properties and yields.

Big Mushroom Tree

Big Mushrooms are a rare occurrence on the farm. They do not appear to be plantable, though they do spread like other trees, and yield Red Mushrooms when chopped down.

These trees can be tapped and will yield mushrooms over time.

Palm Trees

Palm Trees do not drop seeds, but may occasionally drop coconuts when chopped down. They cannot be tapped.

Known Bugs

(Version 1.07): Planting a tree inside the Greenhouse on a tilled square will result in "planted seeds" that look similar to parsnips. Hovering above it shows a "pick up" animation, however the seeds simply disappear upon doing so. This bug does not occur when planting a tree on an untilled square.
