The Furnace smelts Ore into Bars, to be used in several Crafting recipes. Clint gives you the blueprint for the Furnace in a cutscene the morning after you collect at least 1 Copper Ore. Copper ore obtained from geodes, fishing treasure, or purchased from Clint may activate the cutscene, but must be picked up as a single item from the ground to count. You can purchase a single copper ore from Clint on day 1, drop it on the ground, pick it up, and the cutscene will activate the next morning. You must exit your house between 6am and 11:30am to trigger the cutscene.
If you have not yet met Clint when he comes to give you the blueprint, the meeting will count as an introduction.
A furnace is the reward for completing the 
Blacksmith's Bundle in the Boiler Room.
The furnace will occasionally make the sound that is when you place down wallpaper or flooring
Smelting
To smelt any ore, equip it and activate the furnace while there is Coal in your inventory. One unit of Coal is required for each smelting operation, regardless of the material or duration.
