For a detailed analysis of profit using the Preserves Jar, see Preserves Jar Productivity.

Jellies and pickles can be produced by inserting either a fruit or a vegetable in a preserves jar, respectively. The value of a single jar of jelly or pickles is equal to (2 * Base Crop Value + 50). Jelly and pickles are unaffected by the quality of the fruit or vegetable used.

A preserves jar requires 4000 minutes to produce pickles or jelly. This will take 2-3 days, depending on what time of day the processing begins. [1]

Products

Quality of ingredients makes no difference to the finished product. The value of the finished product is determined using the base value (i.e., with no silver or gold star) of the fruit/vegetable. However, the preserved version is always more profitable than even gold star produce, although the profit margin is lower compared to normal produce.

  1. Processing time calculates differently during the night between 2am to 6 am, each hour processing an extra 40 minutes for a total of 100 minutes. For a 4,000 minute processing time this results in either sleeping for 2 nights with 13 hours 20 minutes split between before the first night and after waking on the day processing completes, or 3 nights with an additional 6 hours 40 mimnutes split between before the first night and after waking on the day processing completes.
For example, if placing a vegetable(4,000 minutes processing required) into a preserves jar on Monday at 9:00am, the pickles will be ready for collection at 10:20pm on Wednesday. If a fruit(4,000 minutes processing required) was then immediately placed into the preserves jar, the jam will be ready for collection at 9:00 am on Saturday. As can be seen, this results in 2 full processings every five days.
Starting processng between 12:40pm to 7:20pm will result in 'lost' processing time due to processing completing during the 2am-6am period of the night.
