The Magnet is a type of bait that increases the chance of finding treasure chests by 15% (30% chance base instead of 15% base). It can be crafted or purchased from Willy's Fish Shop for data-sort-value="1000">Gold.png1,000g after reaching fishing level 9. It can also be purchased from the Casino for data-sort-value="1000">QiCoin.png1,000. It is received as one of the prizes for winning the Ice Fishing Contest at the Festival of Ice for the first time, and can also be received as a gift from Willy at the Feast of the Winter Star. It may also randomly appear in Krobus' shop on Wednesdays for data-sort-value="200">Gold.png200g, or at the Traveling Cart for data-sort-value="15"Gold.png100–1,000g.

Magnets cannot be used with the Training Rod or the Bamboo Pole. Only the Fiberglass Rod (unlocked at Fishing level 2) or the Iridium Rod (unlocked at Fishing level 6) can use bait. Magnets can also technically be used in a Crab Pot, but it is no better than standard bait as crab pots never yield any treasure.

Use

Each cast uses one piece of bait or one magnet. When all bait is used up, the game pops up a notification saying "You've used your last piece of bait."

To attach bait to a fishing rod, open the inventory, click on the bait (Left-Click.png left-click or Right-Click.png right-click, depending on how many bait will be used), and then Right-Click.png on the rod. To remove bait, Right-Click.png on the rod.

On an Xbox controller, press 360 A.png on the bait to select the whole stack (or 360 X.png to pick up a single one), then 360 X.png to attach to the rod.

On a PS4 controller, press PS4 Cross.png on the bait to select the whole stack (or PS4 Square.png to pick up a single one), then PS4 Square.png to attach to the rod.

On a Nintendo Switch Controller, Press Switch A.png on the bait to select the whole stack (Or Switch Y.png to pick up a single one), then Switch Y.png to attach to the rod.

Bait can be detached by pressing PS4 Cross.png on either Controller. (Switch Y.png on Nintendo Switch)

For the mobile version, bait can be added to the fishing rod by opening the inventory, then dragging the bait and dropping it on top of the rod.

Notes

  • Despite the description, the Magnet has the same effect on fish bite rate as standard Bait (decreasing biting time by 50%).
  • While the Magnet can be purchased at the Fish Shop for data-sort-value="1000">Gold.png1,000g, crafting is a cheaper option, even if purchasing the ingredients. In year 1, 5 Iron Ore and 1 Coal cost data-sort-value="900">Gold.png900g at the Blacksmith (data-sort-value="300">Gold.png300g per magnet). In years 2+, 5 Iron Ore and 1 Coal cost data-sort-value="1500">Gold.png1,500g (data-sort-value="500">Gold.png500g per magnet).
  • Success at playing the minigames in the Casino can also yield virtually free Magnets from the Casino shop.
