It should be noted that this table is based on maximum profit without regard to time -- if looking at gold per day based on the time required (2 days for the preserves jar, 7 days for the keg), it is ''always'' more profitable to use a preserves jar, on the highest value item possible. Even quality crops do not approach the same amount of gold per day in a keg as in a preserves jar.

It should be noted that these calculations only involve the value gained in terms of max profit; if looking at profit per day based on the time required, the preserves jar will outpace the keg regardless of the base value of the item (in every case) since the preserve jar has a much faster processing time. However, it is possibly even more critical to note that this means you will burn through your supply of crops much more quickly (with less overall return) and can therefore run out supply, rendering preserve jars ineffective since farm size and crop production is limited.

In general it is better to avoid growing crops that have a higher profit in preserves jars because they are inherently less valuable, and recommended to buy/grow fruit with base values greater than 50g or vegetables with values greater than 200g, where the keg becomes more profitable. When above these base sell prices, it is always more efficient in the long run to process them in kegs, since kegs only add a delay - but only if the number of kegs you can craft/place can keep up with your crop production. Since it is common to have difficulty producing enough kegs in the early game to keep up with the incoming supply, it can therefore be beneficial to process some lower-value items with jars to match the incoming supply as closely as possible. It also may be desired, at times, to process a batch of crops through preserves jars simply for a quicker return during the early game when having more funds sooner could mean better progress in the game overall. From a min-max perspective it is optimal to avoid preserve jars entirely and focus on keg production with higher-value items, and keeping their processing throughput higher than the amount of crops you can produce. This can be difficult to execute which is where having some preserve jars as a backup processing method can come in handy.

For a detailed analysis of profit using the Preserves Jar, see Preserves Jar Productivity.

The Preserves Jar is a type of Artisan Equipment used to make Artisan Goods. It takes a single fruit or vegetable and converts it into Jelly or Pickles, respectively, in 4000 minutes of game time.

Preserves Jars consume less time than Kegs, but will usually yield less profit. However, low-value, high-yield crops like Blackberries, Green Beans and Corn are actually more profitable in the preserves jar than in the keg, as well as being much faster to process. As an example, corn juice, which is made in the keg, is worth data-sort-value="113">Gold.png113g, but corn pickles, which are made in the preserves jar, are worth data-sort-value="150">Gold.png150g. Salmonberry wine, which is made in the keg, is only worth data-sort-value="15">Gold.png15g, but Salmonberry jelly, which is made in the preserves jar, is worth data-sort-value="60">Gold.png60g.

Jellies and Pickles are common villager favorites (see Friendship).

A Preserves Jar is the reward for completing the Bundle Teal.png Quality Crops Bundle in the Pantry.

Products

Quality of ingredients makes no difference to the finished product. The value of the finished product is determined using the base value (i.e., with no silver or gold star) of the fruit / vegetable. However, the preserved version is always more profitable than even gold star produce, although the profit margin is lower compared to normal produce.

The number of days of processing time may vary. See the Notes section.

Preserves Jar vs. Keg

See also: Preserves Jar Productivity, Keg Productivity

The Preserves Jar increases the profit of a crop using the following equation: (2 × Base Crop Value + 50); while the Keg multiplies the base value of Fruits by 3, and Vegetables by 2.25. Because of this, low-value, high-yield crops like Corn or Tomatoes are more valuable in the preserves jar. The keg, on the other hand, favors crops with a much higher base value, such as Ancient Fruit or Melons.

Below is a list of crops that are more beneficial to be put in the preserves jar, along with their raw base sell price.

*Both wine and jelly each sell for data-sort-value="150">Gold.png150g, but jelly processes faster than wine.

It should be noted that these calculations only involve the value gained in terms of max profit; if looking at profit per day based on the time required, the preserves jar will outpace the keg regardless of the base value of the item (in every case) since the preserve jar has a much faster processing time. Storage Options

See also: Keg storage options, Crafted goods outside the farm

While Preserves Jars can be stored anywhere on the farm, it is more space efficient to store them inside farm buildings or outside the farm altogether.

Notes

Processing time calculates differently while you sleep than while you are awake. 1 hour = 60 minutes when awake but = 100 minutes when sleeping. So if you sleep a whole day, a preserves jar would record 2400 minutes (100 × 24) of processing. If you work from 6:00AM till 12:00AM and sleep 6 hours, it will process 1680 minutes a day (60 × 18 + 100 × 6). If you work from 6:00AM till 2:00AM and faint 4 hours, it will process 1600 mins a day (60 × 20 + 100 × 4).

Trivia

  • The description of the Preserves Jar states that it makes Jam, but it actually produces Jelly.
