The time of day when a tapper is placed (or when an existing tapper is harvested) has a pronounced inverse effect on the processing time.  Every one hour delay in start time causes the tapper to be ready 40 minutes '''earlier''' (i.e., processing time is reduced by 100 minutes).  Some specific values are provided in the table below.  All tappers placed during the same hour (e.g., 7:00 to 7:50 am) will be done at the same time; the 40 minute jump happens at the start of a new hour (e.g., 8:00 am).

!style="width: 48px;" | Image
Internally, the game code explicitly subtracts the time of day from the processing time -- potentially with the intent of having a single fixed completion time for all tappers -- but the subtraction uses 100 minute hours instead of 60 minute hours.

One key implication is that players who wish to have pine tar available at the end of the [[Egg Festival]] (10 pm Spring 13) need to place their tappers either on Spring 7 or '''after''' 5 pm on Spring 8; tappers placed on the morning of Spring 8 will not be ready until the day after the festival.

This article is about the item. For the profession, see Skills#Foraging.

The Tapper is a type of Refining Equipment that can be placed on a tree to produce Maple Syrup, Oak Resin, Pine Tar, Sap, or Mystic Syrup. It can also be placed on a Mushroom Tree to produce different mushrooms. It can also be placed on Fiddlehead Stalks to produce Fiddlehead Ferns.

When a tree has a Tapper on it, the tree is unable to be directly shaken (by interacting with it). However, if the tree is moss-covered, it will be shaken when you swing a scythe or weapon on the tree to remove the moss.

The Tapper can be removed from a tree by hitting it once with an axe or pickaxe. This leaves the Tapper intact and able to be reused. If the Tapper is on a tree when it is struck by lightning or hit by an exploding bomb, both the Tapper and its contents are destroyed.

During Winter, tappers placed on Maple Trees, Oak Trees, Pine Trees, Mahogany Trees, or Mystic Trees continue to produce; however since Mushroom Trees and Fiddlehead Stalks turn to stumps in Winter, tappers placed on them produce nothing during that season.

The Tapper cannot be placed on Fruit Trees.

History

  • 1.4: Fixed issue that could leave trees unchoppable if tapper was removed in unusual fashion. Tappers can now be stacked in a player's inventory and in chests.
  • 1.5: Added the Heavy Tapper. Fixed bug where processing time was affected by the time of day.
  • 1.6: Recipe is now learned at Foraging Level 4 instead of Level 3. Mystic Syrup and Fiddlehead Fern now possible products.
