Crafting Fertilizer is almost always cheaper than purchasing it.  [[Sap]] is easy to come by (from cutting [[Trees]] and killing [[Slimes]]) early in game, so it's a good idea to craft [[Basic Fertilizer]] as soon as you reach Farming Level 1.  It's also a good idea to craft [[Crab Pot]]s as soon as you reach Fishing Level 3, to catch [[Fish]] and make [[Quality Fertilizer]].
