Tips

In mobile, when tap-to-move is enabled, there are two slightly different ways to move: “tap to move” and “follow my finger”.

Tap-to-move (TTM)

When you tap on a tile, your character will move to that tile, if the algorithm for movement decides it is possible to move there. In most cases, this works very well and moves the character by the shortest route. The algorithm is not particularly smart and will not trace a route through tiles that are occupied by NPCs, pets, farm animals, etc. For example, with a river farm, it will not trace a path over a bridge that is occupied by a farm animal, so it may decide, if you use TTM, to send the character through some long and torturous route. In a barn or coop, moving farm animals may confuse the algorithm and cause the character to constantly reroute, run off in some random direction, or stop.

Follow My finger (FMF)

When you keep your finger on the touch surface, in the direction you want the character to move, you get more precise control and the character can maneuver through some things that would block TTM (such as farm animals on a bridge). FMF is the only way to get past pets, children, and spouses who are blocking the path inside the farmhouse, though not always immediately.

Additional notes about tap-to-move

These are things I think we should include, though I'm not entirely sure how or where.

First, the auto-tool feature of tap to move does not work if the needed tool is the scythe or a weapon. Both of those must be explicitly selected to be used. In the caverns with the sword selected, auto-tool will automatically do a temporary switch to the pickaxe for all of the nodes, and then immediately switch back to the sword.

Second, tap to move has an tricky danger. If the "active tools slot" is empty, and you greet your spouse, and they give you a bomb, and the bomb goes into the active empty tool slot, and you tap-to-move, then guess what - you just planted a bomb inside your house! Spouses, children, pets, and the house itself are not affected, but you and some of the furniture may be destroyed.

Third, you have to be careful using tap-to-move on the edge near the tool bar (or whatever it's called). More than once I've accidentally changed the selected item with annoying results.

A couple other things I thought of.

One, bombs aren't the only issue with stuff going into an empty-active slot. I've also given gifts to NPCs that I didn't intend to.

There are two bugs with tap to move, at least in iOS 1.4.5.

One is, if you have have a tool selected and go to greet a spouse or child, sometimes the tool will swing at them as if they were a monster. This is very scary, but completely benign.

The other is that, inside the house, tap to move will sometimes result in the farmer picking up random furniture or art work, even when you didn't tap on that piece, or anywhere near it.
