Through thorough testing I've discovered that watering/tilling and planting crops does in fact not give any experience whatsoever.Farming experience is only awarded upon harvesting the crops.

The farming skill level can be viewed in the skill tab of the pause menu. Each level grants +1 [[proficiency]] to the hoe and watering can [[tools]]. Levels are gained by using these tools, by harvesting, watering, and farming [[crops]].The amount of experience gained from harvesting crops varies based on the value of the harvested crop,with more expensive crops giving more experience upon harvest.

To level up farming from level 0 to 1, it takes harvesting 12 parsnip plants or 8 potato plants or 5 cauliflower plants,and from level 0 to 2 it takes 48 parsnip plants or 28 potato plants or 17 cauliflower plants.
