Why not truffle crabs?

Frogs from frog eggs do not eat truffle crabs. Does anyone know why? I'd like to be able to mention it on this wiki page.

The other exceptions all make sense for game-mechanics reasons. It would be annoying if they ate the slimes you breed, or the rare prismatic slime that you need for a quest. And I cannot blame them for not wanting to eat "The secret enemy in the basement of the Mayor's Manor"... (yuck). So, I don't feel like any of those are worth explaining in the wiki page. But the truffle crab exception seems like an outlier, and potentially worthy of mention.

I had originally presumed that it was because they were camouflaged as a truffle, and it might look strange for the frog to just randomly eat a truffle (even if truffles are edible). After all, truffles are not monsters, and frogs eat monsters. But, that can't be it, because the frog happily eats the other crabs which are similarly camouflaged.

Embarrassing Side story: I thought it was surprising and notable when I first saw my frog randomly gulp down an (entirely inedible) iridium node. I mean, iridium nodes are not monsters and frogs eat monsters, so I thought this was surprising, and even added a note about it on the page. But of course I was being silly! (And thankfully my edits were reverted before too many people could see my error on display). Obviously it was not an iridium node, but rather an unrevealed iridium crab. And, as I was reminded, iridium crabs are monsters and frogs eat monsters. How silly I was to be surprised by a frog eating what appeared to be an ore-rich lump of stone. I have since corrected my thinking, and if I ever see an amphibian slurp down a hunk of mineral in the future, I will be sure not to find it the slightest bit noteworthy. But I digress...

So.. back to the question at hand... why do the frogs spare the truffle crabs? ... Do they just taste bad? If that's all it is, then it's just trivia and not worth mentioning on the page. But if it's for some other game mechanic-y reason, maybe someone should add that information here. On the other hand, if it really is just because it looks odd for a frog (who eats monsters) to eat a truffle (which is not a monster), then perhaps the note about it being willing to eat other monsters who look like non-monsters might be noteworthy after all? --Rossc719 (talk) 09:35, 2 September 2024 (UTC)

There is no reason for a frog to destroy a truffle crab, since it does not damage the player. It's listed in the game files along with other monsters, but it is not really a monster in the sense that it will damage the player. So there is no reason for a frog to destroy it. Initially in the 1.6 beta, frogs did destroy them, then someone mentioned it in a bug report, and it was fixed. For obvious reasons that don't need to be mentioned on the page. margotbean (talk) 11:52, 2 September 2024 (UTC)
