Coal is collected in many different ways, primarily while mining. Coal is used in some crafting recipes and allows for smelting in a furnace to occur.
You can farm coal by killing Dust Spirit between levels 41-79 (Use the elevator to come and go to do it faster). Doing that it easy to farm Iron Ore as well.
