The Magnet is a type of bait that doubles the chance of finding Treasure Chests (30% chance instead of 15% base). It can be crafted, purchased from Willy's Fish Shop for 1,000g after reaching Fishing Skill Level 9, bought from the casino's store for 1,000, or received as one of the prizes for winning the ice fishing contest at the Festival of Ice. It can also be received as a gift from Willy at the Feast of the Winter Star, and may randomly appear in Krobus' shop on Wednesdays. It may also randomly appear in the Traveling Cart's stock for 100–1,000g.
Magnets cannot be used with the Training Rod or the Bamboo Pole. Only the Fiberglass Rod (unlocked at Fishing level 2) or the Iridium Rod (unlocked at Fishing level 6) can use bait. Magnets can also technically be used in a Crab Pot, but it is no better than standard bait: crab pots never yield any treasure.
Use
Requires: Fiberglass Rod, Iridium Rod, or Advanced Iridium Rod.
Each cast uses one piece of bait or one magnet. When all bait is used up, the game pops up a notification saying "You've used your last piece of bait."
To attach bait to a fishing rod, open the inventory, click on the bait ( left-click or right-click, depending on how many bait will be used), and then on the rod. To remove bait, on the rod.
On an Xbox controller, press on the bait to select the whole stack (or to pick up a single one), then to attach to the rod.
On a PS4 controller, press on the bait to select the whole stack (or to pick up a single one), then to attach to the rod.
On a Nintendo Switch Controller, Press on the bait to select the whole stack (Or to pick up a single one), then to attach to the rod.
Bait can be detached by pressing on either Controller. ( on Nintendo Switch)
For the mobile version, bait can be added to the fishing rod by opening the inventory, then dragging the bait and dropping it on top of the rod.

Notes
- Despite the description, the Magnet has the same effect on fish bite rate as standard Bait (decreasing biting time by 50%).
- While the Magnet can be purchased at the Fish Shop for 1,000g, crafting is a cheaper option, even if purchasing the ingredients. In year 1, 5 Iron Ore and 1 Coal cost 900g at the Blacksmith (300g per magnet). In years 2+, 5 Iron Ore and 1 Coal cost 1,500g (500g per magnet).
- Success at playing the minigames in the Casino can also yield virtually free Magnets from the Casino shop.
