Artifacts are found items that can be donated to the Museum for display or sold, though these items tend to sell for very little gold.
Artifacts aside from the Ancient Seed are not used for Crafting or requested by Villagers for quests.
Donating to the Museum will give the player rewards when donation milestones are reached (Minerals can also be donated), or when specific artifacts are donated.
Each Artifact may only be donated once, though can be found several times.
Artifacts can be acquired by:
- Using the Hoe on areas of the ground with 'dancing sticks' or 'worms'. These marked areas will reward different artifacts depending on their location, these locations also change drastically during Winter and are now much easier to spot.
- Using a Hoe on dirt located within The Mines (Skull Cavern Dirt Patches unconfirmed).
- Killing Monsters (Ancient Seeds and the Dwarf Scrolls are the only artifacts which can drop from monsters).
- Fishing for treasure chests.
Aside from Museum donation there are a few artifacts with unique unlocks:
- Donating an Ancient Seed returns the packet version which can then be planted, growing an Ancient Fruit tree; The crafting recipe for this version is also unlocked.
- Donating all four scrolls to the museum unlocks a special reward which allows players to understand the dwarf language and interact with the merchant inside the mines.
- The dinosaur egg can be incubated in a Coop, similar to normal egg, to produce a Dinosaur, which lays more dinosaur eggs when fully grown.
- Donating the Ancient Drum rewards the player with a Drum Block.
- Donating the Bone Flute rewards the player with a Flute Block.
- Donating the Chicken Statue rewards the player with a Chicken Statue for their home.
- Donating the prehistoric bone pieces rewards the player with the Sloth Skeleton pieces.
- Donating the Rare Disc rewards the player with the Burnt Offering.
Note Further testing is needed to confirm the Locations for Dwarf Scrolls I through IV as it is still unknown if the level of the mine affects the drop rate, or the type of monster killed. (It is speculated to be the monster variety itself, as these scrolls tend to drop from slimes of different color located within the Secret Woods)
