Clay is collected from either "worms" tiles, geodes, or randomly when tilling dirt with a hoe. Clay can be found both on and outside the farm, particularly when tilling at the beach or in the mines.

The only building requiring clay is the silo.

Recipes requiring clay include the Keg and quality retaining soil.

An effective way to obtain clay is to go to a long, open strip of land (preferably outside the farm so you won't have to clean up) and till with a hoe horizontally until a tile yields clay. Then till upwards on that same tile, and all of the tiles should contain clay. If you till a different tile horizontally, it will render the clay of the last "column" nonexistent.
