Deletion of discussion archives

Hi! You deleted Stardew Valley Wiki:Admin noticeboard/Archives/2021-02 with a note that it's unneeded. The old wiki is temporary, so discussions that aren't archived to the new wiki will eventually be lost forever. What's the issue with archiving important discussion pages to avoid that? —Pathoschild (talk) 03:25, 20 February 2021 (UTC)

I was under the impression that the old wiki was not temporary. If it's going away, then that changes things. Let me confirm with the Admin what's going to happen with the old wiki. margotbean (talk) 03:27, 20 February 2021 (UTC)
I was told by Katzeus it "will be up for a while", so I think there will be plenty of time to archive stuff (people could even use to permanently save the old wiki), but it does sound like it's going to go down eventually. Hopefully there will be a heads up if/when that happens. I will personally make use of the admin noticeboard archive if a copy is kept on this site though. - Odin (talk) 01:54, 22 February 2021 (UTC)

I was looking through the history on the stone owl page (Event) and saw that one of the changes was you saying it's an owl and not a parrot? StatueOfPerfection (talk) 19:25, 20 February 2021 (UTC)

Is there any particular reason you reverted the edits that adds salmonberries as a like for any NPC who likes it? --Rayram (talk) 07:39, 21 February 2021 (UTC)

Nevermind. I completely missed the "All fruit" tags.--Rayram (talk) 07:54, 21 February 2021 (UTC)

Salmonberries are one of those deceptive foraged items that actually count as another category of items. Glad you saw the comments on the other edits. Cheers! margotbean (talk) 17:33, 21 February 2021 (UTC)

Hello Margotbean. Issue is "Hotbar" and pressing Tab to cycle inventory rows

Pressing tab to cycle through rows of inventory isn't mentioned in any wiki pages (or atleast I didn't come across anything like that). And most of the information about "hotbar" feature is now deprecated. I just created my account and started translating the Turkish pages, I want to help. I will try to correct it but I need to hear your idea on the subject. --Sev21 (talk) 15:37, 21 February 2021 (UTC)

Hello Sev21! On the English wiki, that info. is on the Controls page (for PC), where the "Tab" key says "Shift toolbar", and at the bottom of the Inventory page, the very last line, under "Tips". You could elaborate a bit about what "shift toolbar" means (on the English wiki), and please feel free to update the Turkish pages. You'll probably find that several (if not all) of the Turkish pages are out of date, since they were copied from English before version 1.5 (or before version 1.4 in some cases). Go ahead and update, have at it! And have fun! Welcome to the wiki! margotbean (talk) 17:33, 21 February 2021 (UTC)

Technical wiki improvements

You mentioned some "more pressing bugs" in this post. Are there some template issues floating around? Or something else? RetroEdit (talk) 13:58, 23 February 2021 (UTC)

Something else. There are a couple of template issues, but they're not impacting the user experience, so they're not #1 priority. Why do you ask? Do you have an idea of how to fix the "wanted page" error for "River" for the fish infoboxes? margotbean (talk) 18:53, 23 February 2021 (UTC)
Yep, I investigated the "River" issue the other day. This explains the issue and potential solutions. RetroEdit (talk) 19:50, 23 February 2021 (UTC)
Follow-up: I fixed the River issue. I'm looking into some of the SEO issues next, like the one for Template:Infobox fish, but those seems more complicated. I do have some general ideas for making them easier to detect and resolve. RetroEdit (talk) 13:49, 24 February 2021 (UTC)
Thanks for your interest, but we will be fixing those asap, while keeping all 12 languages consistent. margotbean (talk) 21:01, 24 February 2021 (UTC)
I'm not clear on how edits could be synced between different language versions: do 12 separate edits have to be made for each change to a template? That seems kind of annoying if that has to be done manually.
I understand the page move issue (though I would note the redirects would still preserve the interwiki links in both directions). RetroEdit (talk) 21:06, 24 February 2021 (UTC)
Yes, everything has to be synched manually, 12 edits for each template change. This is the reason we want to use talk pages before making changes. margotbean (talk) 21:24, 24 February 2021 (UTC)

Typos in item description that cannot be edited and talk pages missing

Hello! I was trying to help a bit in some minor ways on the wiki and noticed two things: 1.) the contents of the talk pages from the old wiki seem to not have been copied/transferred. example I checked crab pots and luck pages on the old wiki and there are talk pages, on the new one there are none: which is unfortunate because I feel like the old talk pages hold valuable information. Second: I noticed spelling errors that seem not to be editable: Artifacts:Ornamental Fan: This exquisute fan (misspelled exquisite) and Artifacts:Golden Relic: with heiroglyphs and (misspelled hieroglyphs). Dubesor (talk) 05:29, 26 February 2021 (UTC)

Hey, I'm just an ordinary editor, but I can answer your second question. Those descriptions are misspelled on purpose in order to accurately reflect the way they're spelled in the game. I have an old save file with those items in a chest, and I just verified that those (mis-)spellings are still accurate. I don't know about the talk pages, and I don't want to start a rumor by speculating. Zendowolf (talk) 08:19, 26 February 2021 (UTC)
Oh, you're right, they are misspelled ingame too. Found a third one: Jasper:When polished, this stone becomes attactively luminous. (misspelled attractively). Dubesor (talk) 09:05, 26 February 2021 (UTC)
Hello Dubesor! The way to handle in-game misspellings is to place a note on the page that explains that the misspelling appears in-game, as on the Beet page.
If you find relevant info on talk pages, it can be copied to the new wiki. But, be sure it's current and relevant to the 1.5 game code, and isn't reflected on the actual page for the item already. There's lots of interesting discussion, but it's outdated and not necessary to migrate it. So, you have to be careful about what's considered "valuable information". I'm sure there are some bits that are valuable (like unanswered questions that still need to be researched), so choose wisely. ;) Welcome to the wiki! margotbean (talk) 09:12, 26 February 2021 (UTC)
OK! Done as with the beets, however Jasper description (attactively/attractively) is only misspelled on the wiki, and spelt correctly in-game. How does one change the description? Dubesor (talk) 10:05, 26 February 2021 (UTC)
I just want to mention that if you're interested in reporting typos in the game, you can do so here: - Odin (talk) 15:41, 26 February 2021 (UTC)
^Good advice, thanks Odin! The place to change typos in descriptions on the wiki is Template:Description. (Use Crtl+F to find the entry for Jasper, there's a LOT of text in there). Good luck, and let me know if you encounter problems. margotbean (talk) 21:49, 26 February 2021 (UTC)

Non-English edits

Hey margotbean! I recently reverted some edits by a user who was making Turkish edits on the English wiki. What's the best way to refer someone to one of the other language wikis? Just post the URL on their talk page? I wasn't sure if there was a better/more native way for me to link them there since I'm not familiar with the other wikis. Here's the user/edits in question: Special:Contributions/Ravenswordd Thank you! Efarn (talk) 02:12, 2 March 2021 (UTC)

There's been no activity on the Turkish wiki, nothing in the spam filters, so I would say there's not much more to do. The links to the Turkish wiki are fairly prominent already. If someeone asks for help, then we can provide it, of course. margotbean (talk) 17:53, 2 March 2021 (UTC)

Lost password and can't reset

Just to check (if this is even the right place for it): this is Polk, I can't seem to access my main username here and the password reset emails haven't helped. (I have checked my spam folder, and I have given it a day or so and tried again.) Is there anything else that could be done for me to get ahold of that old username, or is where I am now the closest bet? Polka (talk) 05:31, 2 March 2021 (UTC)

Just to be clear, you've forgotten your old password? You're unable to login to the old wiki? If so, the other Admin can probably recover your password, they will look into it. Give it a day or so, and message back if you haven't received an email. Thanks for being patient! margotbean (talk) 17:53, 2 March 2021 (UTC)
I have now realized that the stardewcommunitywiki still exists, and I'm still logged in there! Is there a way to have my same username here that I did in the old wiki? When I tried to recreate it I was declined, and this website won't accept the password settings I have for the old one. (If this has already been hashed out somewhere please let me know, I hadn't been able to find it.) Polka (talk) 23:31, 2 March 2021 (UTC)
If you have a previous wiki account, it's been transferred here with the same username and password and you'll just need to sign in here. Creating an account won't work because it's been "reserved" already for you. Is it possible you used a different password than you are remembering? - Odin (talk) 02:23, 3 March 2021 (UTC)
The main problem is the forgotten password. The old database is locked, and there's no way to access it directly. The key to unlock it would be your password, which would prove you are indeed Polk. Unfortunately, I don't think there's a way to see your old password on the old site. It's not stored in cookies in human-readable format. Without the password, anyone could claim to be "Polk" and request a new password, which would not be good.
Despite all that, the other Admin is checking their emails, and will see if anything can be done. We will try! margotbean (talk) 02:51, 3 March 2021 (UTC)
... So, after starting this thread and everything, I discovered that somewhere along the line my saved passwords got switched around (for reasons I can't explain), and it was buried a few layers deep where I couldn't see. I think I've resolved it now! Sorry I didn't catch this earlier, and thank you guys very much for looking into this. Polk (talk) 15:00, 3 March 2021 (UTC)
Very glad you got it sorted out! margotbean (talk) 20:13, 3 March 2021 (UTC)

Tapper and tapped products

Hello, I feel quite strongly that the mention of crafted products is non-trivial information about the group of items produced by the Tapper and would like to find a constructive means to include this information somewhere on the wiki. Some of those crafted items like the Keg as artisan equipment and Speed-Gro are very useful and I think it's important to know how to find and obtain their crafting ingredients. You have mentioned that there is item-specific information on their individual pages, but I feel like it isn't sufficient for various reasons, such as comparing outputs and planning purposes between the group of tapped product items. I've tentatively added a "Used in" column similar to that on Fish and Crops as a result, but left no changes to the introductory prose.

If you could clarify your opinion on your reasoning for this that would be much appreciated – for example whether you think it's a stylistic issue and the Tapper page should be like Cheese Press (and other equipment, where no mention of the indirect impact on crafts is necessary), or something else entirely. That would be helpful in trying to find out where to best mention the importance of the Tapper and its products in crafting those useful items (such as the Keg as mentioned), such as choosing a different page to note down the information. Thanks in advance. Techhead7890 (talk) 10:55, 14 March 2021 (UTC)

My reasoning is to keep crafted items' pages consistent and avoid bloat (i.e., duplication of information). I've placed your table in user space at User:Techhead7890/TapperProducts for your convenience. Feel free to change it and add any notes you find personally helpful there. Thanks! margotbean (talk) 16:41, 14 March 2021 (UTC)
To summarise, some of the problems with the current setup that I've found are: 1) that they are one of the few artisan goods with craftable products (as far as I can tell cheese, cloth, oil, and honey are the four others, compared to 21 which have no craft uses), making the fact the tapped products are used in crafting equipment non-obvious, and more distinct from the tables used on other equipment pages; 2) that they don't have a page or section of their own to discuss them as a group other than the current Tapper equipment page, as all three of the products share the fact they're used in crafting equipment; 3) and the final one is that like with crops, it's useful to look forward and see what the crops (or products) can be used for and compare those uses before committing to them, which is a distinct processing and a distinct use of the information as an overview, rather than just duplication – I think it's important readers can understand what the products can do at a glance, rather than having to open three separate pages to get a full understanding of their choice. I hope this outlines my reasoning for organising the information in the extra column, even though it's a little different to the other equipment pages, and also that the method of organisation is intrinsically useful because of the ability to compare the items.
I originally thought that one way to resolve this would be to follow the model of the item-group pages I listed above (Fish and Crops) and move the craft information and discussion about the products to artisan goods to keep it separate from the equipment, while still fulfilling the purpose of having a group page to discuss and compare the products together. However, I've also just noted that many of the product lists there are actually transcluded from the relevant Equipment pages using the #lst: command. This is obviously a bit of a pickle in that both pages would have to match, but if the uses are listed on Crops and that is not considered duplication of individual pages, I actually think it's more consistent to have the uses listed for the artisan goods page also. As a result, I'd like to keep the added column in the table in mainspace (and potentially also add "used in" to the four other artisan goods I listed with craft uses).
There are a few alternatives; it would be possible to keep the tables separate and keep different non-transcluded versions on the tapper equipment page and artisan goods group page, but that would likely be a maintenance burden; there is another alternative possibility which is to add a section to Trees outlining the tapper and useful products together in brief prose. However both of those strike me as perhaps more unnecessary duplication than reworking the table. In conclusion, I've explained some reasons for including the information in mainspace, such as the usefulness of keeping the information on multiple pages as an overview, and strongly ask you to reconsider keeping the "Used in" column in the table, but please let me know what option works best. User rename request

I am requesting that my username be changed to User:Celeste.

The reason is because I have recently discovered that I am trans and would like to have a more "valid" name. (I already use the aforementioned username on other wikis).

Would it be possible for me to proceed as such, or should I register for a new account?

Thanks! Kev (talk) 23:25, 16 March 2021 (UTC)

Something weird about the wiki

Hi Margotbean! You should be able to see that I just recently acquired this new username...

For some reason, the IP address shown in the "email confirmation" is wrong, and seems to be a Cloudflare IP. I'm not sure if you have a technical understanding of how MediaWiki works, but the squid servers used for the wiki are wrongly configured. Do you think you would be capable of remedying this? It requires access to the LocalSettings file, unfortunately.

Thanks once again! Trans rights, Celeste (talk) 23:55, 16 March 2021 (UTC)

I don't have access to the server(s), but I will pass the info along to those who do. Thanks! margotbean (talk) 00:00, 17 March 2021 (UTC)

Weapon sell price

Actually I don't know if it's a change from update 1.5, but I know what those values are because I have the game open to making all these changes. But I believe it is a change from version 1.5, since in all languages the value described is the highest. JaksStrange (talk) 16:06, 20 March 2021 (UTC)

Question about talk

Hi, I have a question, if I get a message on my talk, do I reply there or on the talk of who sent me? I got confused. JaksStrange (talk) 16:24, 20 March 2021 (UTC)

Me too, I really don't know. ??? margotbean (talk) 18:26, 20 March 2021 (UTC)
On talk pages, you should respond below their message, like Margot has here. That person will see the change in their watchlist, and responding on the same page keeps discussion in one place. Hope that answers your question! - Odin (talk) 13:29, 21 March 2021 (UTC)

Deletion of mod repository

Hello! revision 117428 by Gilgamsh0n (talk) with the reason 'I know nothing about this site.' on 01:54, 22 February 2021 (UTC) I provided a link to the repository which has 48 SV mods, some of them unique to my knowledge (DarkHax authored mods). would be neat if you could revert this change, CurseForge is a legit repository for mods for a variety of games, and SV mods are very welcome there! Gilgamsh0n (talk) 14:55, 22 March 2021 (UTC)

DarkMax should consider hosting their mods on nexus or the official forums in addition to the site which I still know nothing about. Please remember to place new text at the bottom of the page. margotbean (talk) 14:59, 22 March 2021 (UTC)

Appologies about placing the text at the top! What would be required for you to know more about the site, other than the fact it has mods for many games including SV? Glad to provide more info, it's by no means a small website. for your convenience. Gilgamsh0n (talk) 15:28, 22 March 2021 (UTC)

Please place a message on Pathoschild's talk page, he may be more familiar with the website than I am. margotbean (talk) 14:59, 23 March 2021 (UTC)

Qi Challanges

Hi, I translated some descriptions of Qi Challanges into German and saw that there are two Challanges (in German and ALSO English) wich were in the "Wiki Code" but invisible when reading the page. The Challanges are Five Plaques and Find Qi's double. Do you know why they aren't visible or Am I just lost? I also never had those Quests Ingame... Botautal (talk) 23:21, 24 March 2021 (UTC)

They appear to be unimplemented. There are many things in data files and in the game code that were thought up, but never used, for whatever reason. They just weren't removed from the game's files completely. :) margotbean (talk) 23:29, 24 March 2021 (UTC)
And if they get added in it's super little work to just remove the comment code, which btw Botautal is the reason it's not visible due to the <!-- hidden text --> formatting. The specific german quests you are mentioning are taken from (should be visible in the version history when I added it) Dubesor (talk) 23:40, 24 March 2021 (UTC)
Ah, ok. Thanks for answering!

Desert Trader on main page

Hey Margot! I know we've discussed this before. I left a message on the main menu template talk page and I just wanted to make sure you saw that. If there's more I could do to help with this change, please let me know! - Odin (talk) 19:46, 26 March 2021 (UTC)

Hey Odin! I did see those messages on the Mainmenu template, thanks! I'm reluctant to add just the Desert Trader and make the longest column even longer by one entry, but I may do so anyway, when I have time to change all 12 languages.
Alternatively, I may implement something like User:Zendowolf/Sandbox/MainMenu, but that would require editing the .css (in all languages) to allow for a triple-column "Valley" heading.
I'll take a look at it as soon as I can! margotbean (talk) 19:58, 26 March 2021 (UTC)
Alright, thanks! And I did type out all the text for each language, plus link to each editing page for all the languages, to try and save you some work. That's linked in that other message on the talk page. - Odin (talk) 01:55, 27 March 2021 (UTC)
I've been mucking about with the MainMenu in my Sandbox today. It's better than it was, but CSS changes will be needed to do it right. In addition to the triple-column Valley is the quad-column Items.
I've been doing some local-to-me CSS, so the current version will probably be broken for you. The latest stable version is here.
Zendowolf (talk) 21:07, 27 March 2021 (UTC)
I updated User:Zendowolf/Sandbox/MainMenu to automatically resize when the browser window narrows (i.e. from four columns to one column). Two known issues:
1. The width of The Valley and its contents don't change. This is probably a .css update, but I didn't try to fix it at this time.
2. There's a small vertical spacing issue I couldn't track down. It's probably cell padding somewhere.
It's no longer using the doublewidthmenu classes, so unless #1 requires something weird, it could reduce complexity in the .css. Zendowolf (talk) 21:45, 24 June 2021 (UTC)

Suggestion concerning the Admin Noticeboard

Hi Margotbean,

I was wondering, are the administrators here at SDV Wiki generally accepting of adding new ideas / things to improve the wiki with? I was thinking of reimagining the administrative noticeboard in order to make it much more efficient for new editors, or otherwise implementing a variety of other QoL features, such as renaming users: this wiki can become so much better.

Also, would you mind passing along the news to the sysadmins here to either update or remove the Widgets extension? The current version is highly vulnerable and could be exploited. The extension has already had several vulnerabilities in the past, so I'm unsure if it's worthwhile to keep. On the other hand, many other ones, such as RenameUser and InputBox, could come into great use here.

Thanks and have a great day, Celeste (talk) 00:29, 29 March 2021 (UTC)

And Gadgets (like Widgets but actually secure). And OATHAuth (2-factor authentication). And CodeEditor. JJPMaster (talk) 00:44, 29 March 2021 (UTC)
Changes to the structure of the wiki need to be discussed on talk pages before being implemented. I will pass along the info about widgets to the sysops. Thanks, margotbean (talk) 16:36, 29 March 2021 (UTC)

Large-ish? edit on Random Events

Hi, I really only made an account because I came across a weird unlisted event on my farm, I left a discussion about it on the random events page but don't think I'm comfortable adding something like that to the Wiki Zipper K (talk) 13:00, 30 March 2021 (UTC)

Quest items

Hey Margotbean, I saw another user add Pierre's stocklist stuff to Quests (in English and German wiki) and saw you removed it due to it not being a quest item. So I wondered what the item type actually was, but in ObjectInformation.json 897 (line 673) it is labeled "Quest". But so is Ornate Necklace, and that doesn't trigger the Quest interface either afaik. Which reference do you use for something being quest? Only Quests.json? Dubesor (talk) 00:15, 3 April 2021 (UTC)

If an item doesn't generate a quest in-game, then it's not a quest item, it's really as simple as that. It doesn't have anything to do with its category in ObjectInformation.xnb or whether it appears in Quests.xnb.
The entire section on the Quests page was created solely for items that wouldn't have enough information about them to warrant their own page, but players looking for information about them could search for the item name and find out what to do with it. So there are redirects from the item name to the section on the Quests page for those items. Pierre's Missing Stocklist has its own page already, as does the Ornate Necklace. Hope this helps, margotbean (talk) 18:02, 3 April 2021 (UTC)
Hi, I added the Stocklist to Questitems because this point in Version History: „Pierre will sell his seasonal stock all year after fullfilling a new Quest‟ (or something like that). I don't know if the Version History is official from Ape or from anywhere else. If it is official (I think) it sounds like being a Quest item... Well… thanks for correcting my mistake. Can't Create Talk Page

Hello, I'm trying to create a talk page on the "Quests" Page, as I believe that taking a Special Orders quest alters the in-game probability of some things significantly. (See: It isn't letting m. Every time I try to save it just reloads the page with a new Captcha. I am 100% sure I've put in the Captchas correctly, and tried all uppercase, all lower case, capitalizing the first letter of proper nouns, only one word for two word answers (no spaces); nothing seems to work. Improving the state of the wiki

Hi Margotbean! New editor here, but I've had experience with editing wikis before. I had some ideas for the wiki and I'd like to raise them to you, but I was wondering if there was a more informal place to bring them up (like on Discord)? Thanks! Haidro (talk) 04:43, 11 April 2021 (UTC)

First read Help:Editing, then you can propose changes on a relevant talk page, the Admin noticeboard, or my talk page. Thanks, margotbean (talk) 17:44, 11 April 2021 (UTC)
Thanks for the link. Firstly I'll give you a bit of a preface: I'm an admin on the RuneScape Wiki. If you're not familiar with it, RuneScape is an MMORPG with over 20 years of content, and updates (almost) every week. The Wiki has existed since 2005, we forked from Fandom back in 2018 and have been thriving in our own domain.
I started playing SDV almost 2 months ago and I've noticed some things about this wiki that could be improved based on my experiences with the RuneScape Wiki. Some of these are drastic changes so I'm listing them here instead of obviously going ahead and doing the changes:
  1. More granularity on pages (i.e, splitting up more pages into individual pages). An example of this is having individual pages on each type of roe. While a singular page is easier to maintain, there are way more advantages of splitting this up into their own pages:
  • One particular roe may have specific behaviour others don't. For example, sturgeon roe makes caviar. Why should the roe page mention it under "Artisan Goods" when only sturgeon roe can?
  • Reduce confusion for new players. At first I was confused why there's no page for "Potato juice" (an item required for a quest), and I didn't understand about juice until I understood the concept of using Kegs. Individual pages tell users information exactly about the item they want to know about.
  • Easier to display information on specific pages. Quite frankly, telling me the sell price of roe is 30 + (base fish price / 2) is useless. Individual pages lead to individual sell prices which we can put in the infoboxes.
  • Calculators, SMW, and categories. I'm not an expert in this field, but more granularity makes it much easier to implement stuff like calculators, where we can extract values out of an infobox from each page, instead of having some huge separate database.
  1. More redirects. I know these are easy to make -- is there any specific policy on creating them? Or can I go ahead and make redirects for search terms that don't lead me to a page :). On RuneScape Wiki, we feature an extension called SearchDigest, which lists the top searched red-links.
  2. More guides/tips/strategies. Easier to do if we split more pages up :). Imagine a specific page per quest, with its own devoted infobox, and the article mentioning strategy tips.
Of course, I'm just a new SDV player with some observations. I don't want to come in here and change the style with how everything's done. I'm just here to propose some ideas and ask you for your thoughts. (PS: Sorry for the multiple edits. I didn't realise it wasn't letting me post an external link -- it wasn't giving me any warning lol) Haidro (talk) 10:14, 12 April 2021 (UTC)
The missing redirect / SearchDigest or a similar function absolutely needs to exist. I always wondered why the "Special pages" didn't list failed searches ('Wanted results' maybe?). Editing the German wiki i know for a FACT that there is tons of redirects missing, and search results are shaky at best, but I only ever add a redirect if I happen to stumble upon something obvious missing. And it can't just be taken from the English wiki due to language differences needing completely different redirects. Dubesor (talk) 14:30, 12 April 2021 (UTC)

I'm not sure you read all of Help:Editing. This wiki strives to be an objective encyclopedia of the game, without walkthroughs, advice, or strategies. The facts speak for themselves, and suggest mutliple strategies.

In addition, every change to the English wiki requires cascading changes in 11 other languages. So major changes to the English wiki are not something to be taken lightly.

There's no need for potato juice to have its own page, because a new player wouldn't encounter the quest until they were familiar with juice in general. They would receive the information via a Quest, where the information can be found. Alternatively, they could search for potato juice and find the Juice page, which would explain how to make it, if they somehow didn't know already.

I appreciate your experience with another wiki. I don't think it applies here.

As for redirects, there's no need to create multiple redirects when a search for the term shows results that get the player where they need to go. That's a general statement, of course there are times when a redirect is the perfect solution.

My best advice is to get to know this wiki before proposing huge changes. Thanks so much, margotbean (talk) 16:09, 12 April 2021 (UTC)

I think you misunderstand the purpose of a wiki. It's certainly possible to stay objective while implementing these changes. "The facts speak for themselves" is a bit of a delusional statement, because then you never strive to improve the wiki, and you also insult the players/readers with how much knowledge they should know. My intention with these changes is that you give the players a better experience when using the wiki. Are you really ok with users not being redirected to Mr. Qi when searching for "Mr Qi"? I don't know where your fence is for when to create a redirect, which is why it's better to create redirects for practically any search term. See above to the reply of my suggestions, someone else even suggested this. Potato juice can still be its own page while providing an objective standpoint. If anything, you're being more encyclopaedic by having this granularity. By assuming the knowledge of new players, you forget that there's a certain percentage of them that just don't know. And that's where the wiki is supposed to come in.
A fair point about the interlanguage wikis. I'm curious if you have a percentage breakdown on the most popular language wikis? Haidro (talk) 22:11, 12 April 2021 (UTC)
@Haidro The redirects and several other things don't appear to follow typical use. There is no cirrus or elastic extensions for fuzzy search matching (many/most wikis on 1.35 do this), common term redirects to help new users find pages without extra click-spend (web usability issue) are deleted (From what I read they don't want to do it in 11 other languages), so users have to scan search results which sometimes don't show relevant items at or near the top (or even on the first page sometimes). This wiki doesn't seem to function like a typical game wiki. The approach seems geared towards reducing edits and content to a bare minimum and synchronizing for translation, to reduce workload. Someone asked what the level of tolerance was for improvement, this seems generally low for other than how currently do things. Given this I'd hazard a guess that core staff is limited and they don't have enough translators. I see they aren't using the usual MediaWiki Language Extension Bundle (to quote its extension page: "used to manage multilingual wikis in a sensible way"), which may discourage some translators. Mediawiki-maintained, built-in 1.35 extensions (suggested here or admin page) don't seem to get enabled, regardless of how helpful they might be. It is unclear why, other than unfamiliarity with updating extensions perhaps?
I get the sense that this wiki is more for the game maker to have basic game documentation than for users to have an optimal game wiki. It is hosted by the game maker, it doesn't fully appreciate bundled mediawiki features and functionality. It seems to be less of a community project, unless editors are willing to only do bare minimal edits, basic no frills info, and nothing approaching usability-related stuff that might require an extra page, extra change, or changes to any significant number of pages. No fancy stuff, a lot of "long" pages (seen in long pages report) and "good enough" docs seems to be the goal rather than "make it good/great". That's fine. Users that want to do substantitive improvement or advanced stuff probably need export and work locally. It would be nice if their Help:Editing page made much clearer the basic mission statement and philosophy, what is welcome and isn't, what they do want and don't (expectations setting and management) so that otherwise helpful MediaWiki editors can onboard more easily to help in the way they want, rather than having negative initial experiences, trying to do what is normal or helpful elsewhere. I'm sure that is the intent, rather that the priorities and reasons for those priorities seem unclear for new users--an area for improvement perhaps, to help reduce workload if they are ever so inclined, though possible this is also not desired. @Haidro RuneScape wiki is awesome btw. I see you guys went the way of SMW over Cargo, I think SD bureaucrats would say a resounding no to SMW due to its maintenance burden (many required extensions, and they won't enable even bundled MW extensions--though also possible they downloaded the core-only version and neglected the normally packaged extensions). You guys have done some pretty special things over there but seem to be English-only (as the other wiki I work on is), which expects users to use built-in browser machine translation. Probably we can't fully appreciate their decision on a manual (and unaided by excellent standard extensions) approach to translation. I too can picture the magic of this wiki with data/other extensions and community TLC, I get it, you just wanted to share a bit of that magic you found and were willing to input time and energy to do it, it was why I came here briefly also. Maybe some time in the future they will expand their staff find their way there themselves. :) Username_Removed (talk) 09:09, 4 July 2021 (UTC)

Issue about Translation page for Modding:XNB files

Hi, Margotbean! Me and my partners have tried to create a Chinese translation page for Modding:Editing XNB files. We made the text format the same as English page and answered the security question correct, but after clicking Save Changes, the page stayed the same except the security question refreshed. I wonder if it's the technical issue? Or something we did wrong? Thank you! ErinY (talk) 21:28, 11 April 2021 (UTC)

Hi! Some security questions on Chinese wiki have incorrect answers. Probably because the questions and the answers are translated by machine. I haven't found out the answer of the game's name when came across this question LOL. You can try to type English instead of Chinese when answering the questions or just try another question. Besides this, some answers are case sensitive. Horizon98 (talk) 05:08, 12 April 2021 (UTC)
Wow, that's awful! I'm so sorry, I've reported the problem to the server people, and I will see if we can fix that! Thanks, Horizon, for the info. I really had no idea. margotbean (talk) 16:13, 12 April 2021 (UTC)
The server people are saying the answers are translated correctly, but the questions may be mistranslated. Can you let me know whenever you find a bad translation in a CAPTCHA? Or something that just doesn't make sense, please? I'm sure the questions were translated by a machine, so there may be errors, but I don't speak Chinese, so I can't fix them. Thank you both! margotbean (talk) 16:27, 12 April 2021 (UTC)
Update: The answer to the game's name question is English-only. I've asked the server people to add "星露谷物语" as a valid answer to that question. Otherwise, please let me know any specific questions and answers that don't work! I cannot test this myself, unfortunately. Thank you! margotbean (talk) 19:24, 12 April 2021 (UTC)
Thanks for your help! I'm not sure which questions have problems now because that I don't need to answer the security questions anymore :D. The former reply was just an impression. I remembered that when I answered the question the name of the game before, I tried to input stardew valley/Stardew Valley/stardewvalley but none of them is correct. I have contacted them in another IM APP and confirmed that it's because of the new editor restriction. Before the wiki's migration, new editors could create new pages in main namespace. But after the migration, it looks like that new editors cannot create new pages in the main namespace until achieve 50 contributions, but there's no warning for this situation (I'm not sure about this because I created a new account a few moments ago but there's no problem when creating new pages). Anyway, they can create new pages now and thanks for your help! Horizon98 (talk) 05:11, 13 April 2021 (UTC)

Deletion of zh pages on en wiki

Hello again! I find that you have deleted the page "Modding:Mod compatibility/zh" and remove the transclusion tag on Modding:Mod compatibility. I created that page to display the Mods forms in Chinese because that I can't transclude the forms on zh wiki. See this talk also: Modding talk:Mod compatibility. If I can't create a zh subpage of Modding:Mod compatibility, could I create this subpage under my own user page? Thanks. Horizon98 (talk) 05:22, 13 April 2021 (UTC)

The problem is that Labeled Section Transclusion doesn't work across languages. You simply can't transclude from the English wiki to the Chinese wiki. So, it doesn't matter where the page is created, unfortunately.
I don't know of a solution that's better than linking to the English wiki, since the page is updated so frequently. Sorry for the bad news. margotbean (talk) 17:37, 13 April 2021 (UTC)
I am aware of this limitation. So I created the page Modding:Mod compatibility/zh on English wiki to transclude the <section> tag in a Chinese article which is on the English wiki, and it actually works. But you deleted the page and I don't understand the reason. Is this because that I can't create a Chinese page on English wiki or another reason? If so, could I move the page to somewhere like User:Horizon98/Mod compatibility/zh? Horizon98 (talk) 05:00, 14 April 2021 (UTC)
Creating a page in your user space would mean that only you or wiki staff could edit it and keep it up-to-date. The English page is updated so frequently, I think the best solution for the long-term is to link to it from the Chinese wiki. margotbean (talk) 16:14, 14 April 2021 (UTC)
So I used <section> tag to keep updating the Mods forms. Horizon98 (talk) 16:16, 14 April 2021 (UTC)
Looking at it in the long-term, we don't want to have 12 versions of the same huge page on the English wiki. There's no reason to transclude instead of link, when all the mod names are in English. Again, I feel the best solution is already in place. margotbean (talk) 16:20, 14 April 2021 (UTC)
Fine, I won't edit these pages. Thanks your reply :D Horizon98 (talk) 16:23, 14 April 2021 (UTC)

DE Frontpage description "Joja-Corporation" isn't translated

Hey, I just noticed that Joja corp isn't translated on the German frontpage. "Corporation" doesn't exist in German and it's not a standalone name either. It should be: "Vor Kurzem ist der Joja-Konzern in die Stadt gekommen [...]" as supported by,, Dubesor (talk) 20:57, 3 May 2021 (UTC)

Cool, I will change it. As a side note, this was a translation paid for by Chucklefish, translated by a professional. However, I don't know what was in the data files back then (the German files may have called it "Corporation"). In any case, I'll be happy to change it. Thanks, margotbean (talk) 17:56, 4 May 2021 (UTC)
I can see that, the translation is miles better than the rest of the game files, there are only 2 "errors" in it, one which was the omitted translation of Joja corp (translators probably had no context to work with) and another one where imperative is used incorrectly, but while not linguistically correct it could be argued to be suitable for emphasis. Dubesor (talk) 09:16, 6 May 2021 (UTC)

Interwiki links in categories

Since this isn't covered in Help:Editing, when should language links be added to categories? And how come a Chinese link is fine, but other languages are not? I guess it makes sense to not add interwiki for maintenance categories, but for example for the pending deletion category I noticed a lot of pending requests (on German wiki as well as other languages), some dating back to early 2020, even 2019, and so I added the links to pending requests, for ease of use. I don't know if someone checks stuff like that manually or not. Dubesor (talk) 21:56, 8 May 2021 (UTC)

The Chinese link can be deleted from the category. Generally speaking, if you don't have the ability to delete a page, you needn't worry too much about it, unless there's a page with a swear word as the name or something similar. margotbean (talk) 00:38, 9 May 2021 (UTC)
Yea, I am not particularly worried, it's just a bit ugly e.g. when a page is in pending deletion due to for example misspelling, the misspelled word will still show up in search suggestions (such as the German "Schmertterlingsstall"). Dubesor (talk) 00:44, 9 May 2021 (UTC)

The average number of truffles being 2.5.

I asume this is the talk page you wanted me to motivate the resutlt. I'm sorry if you meant my own talk page.

Taking what's on the wiki as given, the first truffle is almost guaranteed, and subsequent ones have a likeleyhood of 3/5 and this can happen several times.

The mean value then becomes 1+3/5+(3/5)^2+(3/5)^3.....

This is a infinite geometric series, but it does converge, we can find the value like this.

We call the value S

S(3/5)= 3/5 + (3/5)^2 + (3/5)^3 + (3/5)^4.....

S-S(3/5) = S(2/5)= 1

S = 5/2

Maybe add "the theoretical mean is 2.5", this is excactly the type of thing I come to the wiki for so I thought it would be useful. I can explain the math in greater detail if you like. Viktor36 (talk) 10:48, 15 May 2021

The best place for this type of comment is the talk page of the article being edited, in this case Talk:Pig. It helps the admins (like margotbean) and the other editors (like me) know that your edit has a rational basis and isn't just a subtle form of vandalism or a good-faith edit that's just wrong. I'm not an admin, but I appreciate your efforts to improve the wiki. Zendowolf (talk) 18:40, 15 May 2021 (UTC)
Oh, also note, you can and should sign your comments on talk pages by adding four tildes (~~~~) at the end. Zendowolf (talk) 18:43, 15 May 2021 (UTC)
But, on the Pig page, it says the chance for extra truffles is Friendship / 1500, which at max friendship is 2/3. Where does 3/5 come from? Show that, and we should put the calculations on the Pig talk page. Thank you, margotbean (talk) 19:08, 15 May 2021 (UTC)
Thanks for specifying what was wrong. 3/5 comes from my faliure at basic division haha. Using the correct value of 2/3 the average amount of truffles goes up to 3 with max happiness. Viktor36 (talk) 22:16, 17 May 2021 (UTC)
I added an explanation to the Talk:Pig page. Viktor36 (talk) 22:36, 17 May 2021 (UTC)
Thanks so much! I tweaked the format and added a reference to the calculation. The page is all that much better for your addition now. Thanks again! margotbean (talk) 23:47, 17 May 2021 (UTC)

Apply for the permission to edit module pages

Hi, Morgotbean! I just completed a module to display crafting recipes. And it's easy to update the recipe data if there more craftable objects in the future. The module is here: User:Horizon98/CraftingRecipes. And here is the result: User:Horizon98/Sandbox. But after the unfinished talk: Talk:Crop_Growth_Calendars#Using_module_to_replace_this_page, editing module pages is forbidden for common users. And I don't know the reason. So I come here to apply for the permission to edit module pages. Thanks! Horizon98 (talk) 15:31, 16 May 2021 (UTC)

If you think it's better to use template instead of the module, it's fine to just use the wikitext in the Sandbox. I think it looks better and more clearly than the old one. In fact, Template:CraftingRecipes is the first template that I created. There are some problems in the template and hard to be read or edited. So I suggest replacing it with the new template or the module. I can help with the translation, it's not complex. Horizon98 (talk) 20:17, 16 May 2021 (UTC)

Thanks, I've got it covered. margotbean (talk) 20:46, 16 May 2021 (UTC)

Keeping non-images until all languages have the page

Hello, you reverted my edit to Fish Pond page with that reason. Which page is that referring to, and what does that mean? Kelenius (talk) 19:39, 25 May 2021 (UTC)

The Fish Pond page, in the other 11 languages. Some of them have yet to create the page. margotbean (talk) 19:51, 25 May 2021 (UTC)
And why can't the images be put into the table because of other languages? Kelenius (talk) 19:58, 25 May 2021 (UTC)
Because Template:Name doesn't sort properly in any other language, unless the translator adds extra html to the page. margotbean (talk) 20:02, 25 May 2021 (UTC)
What about the other languages? Can this be maked in other languages? With the right ordering of course. JaksStrange (talk) 09:41, 26 May 2021 (UTC)
It's really not a good idea to add the name template to that table at all, since several fish are in one cell, when you click to sort, they get split up, and only the first fish has a sort value. If you add the name template to one column only, it looks strange. margotbean (talk) 17:45, 26 May 2021 (UTC)

Monsters page

Hello Margot. You removed the floating divs on the "Monsters" page, and I would like to know what do you mean by "they look weird on widescreen"? Personally, I disagree, as the two "Dangerous Monsters" tables are side by side and also reduce the length of the page. I'm not complaining, I just want to know why you think it looks weird. JaksStrange (talk) 19:47, 29 May 2021 (UTC)

It sticks out on the right by itself, past the other tables on the page. margotbean (talk) 19:49, 29 May 2021 (UTC)

Thank you!

I am familiar to wiki-s, but not familiar to editing them. When I did my first (albeit unessesary) edit, and had it deleted, I thought there were rules or some sort of regs to follow, so I looked at your page, and read the help guide to editing, and figured it out. So thanks for posting the link on your user page. Fnaticlyric560 (talk) 18:29, 8 June 2021 (UTC)

On the vegtables page, the stars that are supposed to be in the picture tiles of all the vegtables are scrolling around the screen if you attempt to view the page images on mobile. How do i fix it? Or do i leave it up to the higher-up folks? Fnaticlyric560 (talk) 13:47, 9 June 2021 (UTC)

I see what you mean, I'm just not sure how to fix it yet. As a workaround, perhaps view the page in Desktop mode and zoom in. margotbean (talk) 18:14, 9 June 2021 (UTC)

User TAN0039 deleting articles

Hi Margot, I just joined today because I saw the user TAN0039 mass deleting articles as i was on the wiki. I posted to the main discussion first because I wasn't sure where to go, but then I found your page so I wanted to let you know about it. Crabwithaknife (talk) 23:17, 9 June 2021 (UTC)

Thanks very much Crab! I think the damage has been cleaned up now. Good looking out. :) margotbean (talk) 23:37, 9 June 2021 (UTC)

Of course ! Glad I could help, I hope cleaning that up isn't/hasn't been too bad, thank you for responding so fast ! Crabwithaknife (talk) 23:41, 9 June 2021 (UTC)

Owl event.

I was playing stardew valley earlier today, and had the owl random event happen 2 more times then the wiki said it was supposed to. I now have 3 of the stone owls from the stone owl event on top of the owl I bought from the night market. Is it a glitch, or what? I was playing it on the switch, local co-op if that helps. Fnaticlyric560 (talk) 23:23, 25 June 2021 (UTC)

I think you need to read Random Events#Stone Owl again. The Strange Capsule is the one that can happen only 1x per save file. Cheers, margotbean (talk) 23:31, 25 June 2021 (UTC)

OOOOOOOOOH yeah. Thanks. Fnaticlyric560 (talk) 23:40, 25 June 2021 (UTC)

Using bot to update interwiki links

Hi, Margotbean. I'd like to use my bot to update interwiki links on all languages wikis. And I have tested on 9 pages, it seems to work well. Because it's a very large edit, I want to ask for your opinion before updating these pages. Horizon98 (talk) 08:38, 27 June 2021 (UTC)

I do not think that is a good idea at this time, but I appreciate your interest. margotbean (talk) 17:50, 27 June 2021 (UTC)
Is there a specific reason? I have modified the script's code and the hu links are now in correct order. Horizon98 (talk) 17:53, 27 June 2021 (UTC)
Since there's no specific reason for not doing this and I have used the bot to update about 20 pages which I have checked manually without mistake, I'll update all pages tomorrow. It will take several hours. Horizon98 (talk) 14:58, 29 June 2021 (UTC)
Then you will force me to ban you. Please don't. margotbean (talk) 16:01, 29 June 2021 (UTC)
Is there any reason? I don't violate the wiki policy. You can't ban me without proper reason. Horizon98 (talk) 16:12, 29 June 2021 (UTC)

Hey Margotbean,

Just a question here, on the minerals section under history there is a 1.5 update to the history, does this require one the of the 1.5 warning sections or not? Just a question I though I should ask. Anyway, thanks for your time! Snakebeast (talk) 16:50, 27 June 2021 (UTC)

No, the spoiler warnings were meant to be temporary and will be removed once v1.5 is released on mobile. There's no point in adding more of them now. margotbean (talk) 17:50, 27 June 2021 (UTC)

Is the 1.5 update out for mobile yet? Because there are a bunch of stubs on pages that might not be needed anymore if it is, because me and a volenteer would be willing to spend the time to go and delete the stubs if they are not needed anymore. Fnaticlyric560 (talk) 16:26, 30 June 2021 (UTC)

But the pages that contain stub don't have it because the 1.5 update for mobile hasn't come out, it's like that simply for lack of information. JaksStrange (talk) 16:36, 30 June 2021 (UTC)
Thank you! Fnaticlyric560 (talk) 18:17, 30 June 2021 (UTC)
Waitaminute, I'm sorry, i meant the spoiler warning, not the stub. My bad. Fnaticlyric560 (talk) 16:58, 1 July 2021 (UTC)
The 1.5 update for mobile has not yet been released, so for now the spoiler tags should remain. JaksStrange (talk) 17:47, 1 July 2021 (UTC)

Catfish catch times

Hello, I was using the wiki to find out catch times for the Catfish and saw it was 6am-Noon on a rainy day in the spring. I kept fishing that day past noon and caught a Catfish around 11pm at least and I caught another one around 1am but lack documentation. can you please add back my edit for the catfish time or at aleast have it set to midnight. Thank you for your time. B1ueTeamSucks (talk) 16:57, 1 July 2021 (UTC)

I believe you got confused, 12am is 00:00, i.e, midnight; noon is 12pm. JaksStrange (talk) 17:55, 1 July 2021 (UTC)
I did, Thank you it trips me up sometimes.

Mind the gap

On moblie, i have discovered another glitch on the wiki: when viewing in portrait mode, ocassionally pages will have a massive gap between the picture (i.e the furnace page) and the text below. Is there a way to delete extra spaces or something to fix it, or what? Fnaticlyric560 (talk) 17:48, 3 July 2021 (UTC)

Since all infoboxes are styled the same, and the problem occurs only sometimes, I'm not sure what I could do to fix it. margotbean (talk) 17:59, 3 July 2021 (UTC)
This would require CSS media queries to adjust how items resize or float on different common screen sizes to be mobile friendly. I think this wiki does not do much for mobile users outside of the other theme which is pretty hard to use. Username_Removed (talk) 09:09, 4 July 2021 (UTC)

Spoilers for 1.5

Hey Margotbean,

Its me again! :) Just wondering, I’ve been looking on random pages to edit (looking if there is a mistake) and I found a page you edited recently but didn’t add a spoiler for 1.5 even though it was added in 1.5. Is there a reason for this? Just wondering and questioning as after all you are a admin and I will mostly check with you, if you edited a page and I see a mistake in my opinion, but if there is a definite mistake I would change. Anyway, thanks for your time! Snakebeast (talk) 13:00, 4 July 2021 (UTC)

The spoiler box was meant to be temporary, and never a permanent part of the wiki. At this point (6+ months later), the template has just about outlived its usefulness. It appears on pages where one sentence or image refers to 1.5 changes, and that's too much. So, yes, I'm not actively adding it to pages, because it will only have to be removed later. It's fine that it appears on pages about Ginger Island, and larger pages with lots of 1.5 info, but I'm not seeking to add it to every page at this point. Hope this helps, margotbean (talk) 18:28, 4 July 2021 (UTC)

Maki roll

Hey Margotbean,

I accidentally made a edit on the maki roll section of history. I have now changed this back. (Didn’t know you couldn’t add like in the history area). I don’t know if you want to the credit for the page so feel free to revert my 2 edits on the page. Sorry! Thanks. Snakebeast (talk) 20:53, 5 July 2021 (UTC)

It's no problem, there are no trophies for making edits or anything. Thanks for the kind note! You can put links in the history section, the problem was that the end braces were missing }}.
Without looking at the other cooked dishes pages, they should match, so if they have links, you can copy the text to Maki Roll, if not, then you can leave it as is, or add links to 70-80 cooked dishes. ha ha, your choice! Thanks again for the note, margotbean (talk) 22:31, 5 July 2021 (UTC)

Thanks Margotbean! :)) Snakebeast (talk) 10:34, 6 July 2021 (UTC)

Fertilizer - readd section split

Hi Margot, thanks for your tidying up of my various edits over the past week or so. I just wanted to request readding a section to the top of the Fertilizer page as the introduction is currently extremely messy. When you last did your copyedit at this diff you took out one called "details" and it's not entirely clear why. I'd like to propose readding it as "Mechanics" or "Basics" or something -- I note that Crops and Fish also have introductory sections just below the top intro but ahead of tables etc on their respective pages. Regards, Techhead7890 (talk) 15:04, 21 July 2021 (UTC)

Adding "Mechanics" instead of "Details" would be a good change. It was just that "Details" was too generic for a heading. "Mechanics" seems to fit well, as the paragraphs cover a variety of topics. Thanks! margotbean (talk) 15:12, 21 July 2021 (UTC)

I saw you were adding tables to the villagers pages describing their liked movies, snacks, ect, and wondered if you want help? Fnaticlyric560 (talk) 18:58, 21 July 2021 (UTC)

Well, thanks, but I've updated all 34 villagers already. 😁 margotbean (talk) 19:35, 21 July 2021 (UTC)
Ok.if you need help, just hit me up! Fnaticlyric560 (talk) 20:33, 21 July 2021 (UTC)
Thank you, much appreciated! margotbean (talk) 23:05, 21 July 2021 (UTC)
What a huge mass spam :D! I wonder if it would make sense to replace all the "N/A" with "none" (when e.g. no movie is liked there's an "N/A") because i think that N/A is always very unappealing (I always think something is missing lol). I would do this (or at least help) if you agree. Botautal (talk) 21:38, 21 July 2021 (UTC)
I prefer N/A in English, but I would appreciate a good translation for the German pages! margotbean (talk) 23:05, 21 July 2021 (UTC)

Could you please restore that redirect? It was pretty useful. –MJLTalk 03:59, 23 July 2021 (UTC)

"Farm" redirects to "The Farm", having "Farms" redirect to "Farm Maps" would be terribly confusing. margotbean (talk) 05:24, 23 July 2021 (UTC)

Dwarf scroll

I was "patrolling" the wiki for typos ( I essentially spam the random button until I find something to fix ) and came across a page that says nothing but: "Dwarf scroll may refer to any of these:" and showed links to each of the dwarf scrolls, and wondered if you wanted something done with it? Fnaticlyric560 (talk) 20:48, 25 July 2021 (UTC)

Nope, it's a disambiguation page. Thanks, margotbean (talk) 00:15, 26 July 2021 (UTC)

A what page? Fnaticlyric560 (talk) 21:14, 31 July 2021 (UTC)

Those pages are almost like categories, when you search for Dwarf Scrolls you won't find an item because there are 4 Dwarf scrolls. So this page redirects you to the different Scrolls if you are looking for a specific one. Otherwise The Dwarf translation guide would be even better...
A similar page is the Ore Page, there is no Item named Ore but multiple sorts of Ores. Botautal (talk) 21:52, 31 July 2021 (UTC)

References to game code

I'm looking at pages like Luck so of course see the references to game code. Problem is I don't know where it is referring to. I've unpacked my own copy of the game content but don't see anything even close to a reference to Objects.TV::getFortuneForecast. Can you help me out here? –MJLTalk 19:05, 4 August 2021 (UTC)

The quickest thing might be for you to search the game code for "getFortuneForecast". That should lead you right to it. margotbean (talk) 19:20, 4 August 2021 (UTC)
Where do I find the game code then? When I searched "getFortuneForecast" in my unpacked folder I got nothing. Sorry for the trouble! –MJLTalk 19:21, 4 August 2021 (UTC)
OIC now! You're searching the unpacked "Content" folder. You need to search the game code, which is the decompiled executable "Stardew Valley.exe". You need either Visual Studio or ILSpy to see the decompiled game code. margotbean (talk) 19:25, 4 August 2021 (UTC)
This was immensely helpful; thank you. (: –MJLTalk 22:40, 4 August 2021 (UTC)

Breaking the game

I was playing co-op stardew valley last night and my "farmhand" chose to eat a iridiom-quality holly and passed out in his bed. But for whatever reason, the game glitched, and stopped responding to his joycons. He passed out, but the game didn't register and I made it to bed, slept, but the game did not end the day, time kept passing, and at 2:00 am, kicked me out of bed and ko'd me, and my controller stopped responding. I was forced to close the game and restart the day because of that. Should i document a sort of warning in the wiki, or just leave it alone? Fnaticlyric560 (talk) 15:59, 6 August 2021 (UTC)

Report the bug on the forums first, and if you can reliably replicate it, then we can add a note to the wiki. margotbean (talk) 16:24, 6 August 2021 (UTC)
Status update: after a long time of trial and error, I have discovered the conditions required for the bug to occur: you must be playing 2-player local co-op on the switch, and have had the 'exaustion' effect the day before. Do I add some sort of warning to all energy-draining items, or what? Fnaticlyric560 (talk) 22:46, 30 September 2021 (UTC)
Have you reported the bug on the forums? First do that, then see if there's a reply. margotbean (talk) 15:48, 1 October 2021 (UTC)
I did post it on there, but the only response I got was other people on the forums talking about how they have had the bug too. Happy Spooky month!🎃 Fnaticlyric560 (talk) 17:05, 1 October 2021 (UTC)
OK, yes, we should add the bug to relevant pages. Offhand, Holly, Sap, and Scorpion Carp come to mind. If I understand it, the problem is that the game will soft-lock when playing local co-op on Switch, the player has been exhausted the day before, and eats a poisonous item that drops health to zero (or below). Is that right? Does this happen when a farmhand has been exhausted and eats holly or the host as well? margotbean (talk) 19:35, 1 October 2021 (UTC)
Yes, those are the conditions. It can occur because of the farmhand or the host. on the offand topic, a couple other pages come to mind: purple mushroom, void mayonnaise, and others. thanks for helping :)Fnaticlyric560 (talk) 21:02, 1 October 2021 (UTC) I add a 'warning' section to said pages, or do you have a better idea? Fnaticlyric560 (talk) 15:20, 5 October 2021 (UTC)
Add to the existing "Bugs" section if there is one, otherwise add a "Bugs" section to the page. ok? Thank you very much for reporting this! margotbean (talk) 15:35, 5 October 2021 (UTC)
Got It! Fnaticlyric560 (talk) 15:58, 5 October 2021 (UTC)

You are abusing your admin's right

You have banned me and my bot account for improper reason on Chinese wiki after the talk. I don't think that I have violated the wiki policy. Besides, my bot account has nothing to do with this thing. I have made more than 1000 contributions on the Chinese wiki, and my bot account made nearly 2000 contributions. You are abusing your right. You are a good editor, but I don't think that you are a qualified admin. --Horizon98 (Discussion) 17:15, 7 August 2021 (UTC)

Personally, the reason I completely stopped helping out here, despite spending multiple hours almost daily with thousands of edits and hundreds of full page translations (DE), was Margotbean's lack of cooperation (and frankly maladministration). Undoing edits and instantly deleting files for self-induced reason: "unused" without even the slightest courtesy of inquiry or discussion about intent was only the straw that broke the camel's back for me. I'd think the wiki, it's content and most definitely the quality & quantity of its non-English articles would be better off if the admins worked together and communicated with other helpful editors instead of being aggressive, unnecessarily defensive and frankly condescending.
Margotbean is a fantastic and hard-working editor (which I also have praised in messaging to CA ~4 months ago) but does indeed sometimes not act as an administrator should. Horizon is also a fantastic asset to the quality and content of the wiki, especially for the much needed CN portion. His recent changes on the schedule reverted an English schedule (most likely useless to Chinese readers) back to the former comprehensible translated version, improving the page. I cannot find a broken policy in Help:Editing (policies should be documented before enforcement) and while I am not sure this wiki is capable (due to "understaffing") to uphold standards such as Wikipedia's "Administrators should not normally use their tools in matters in which they are personally involved (for example, in a content dispute in which they are a party).", things like this would be a total non-issue with communication and cooperation instead of hostility. An unjustified temporary ban might not be the end of the world, but at the end of the day things like this destroy motivation for all volunteers involved. Dubesor (talk) 00:30, 8 August 2021 (UTC)
Thanks for your reply and understanding. It relieves me a lot. --Horizon98 (Discussion) 04:20, 8 August 2021 (UTC)
Horizon98, while I don't have the bona fides here that Dubesor has or of course you have, I want to support your declaration. When I was interested in helping out here in Feb 2020 to give back to this Wiki as a thank you for what it has given me, I cautiously dipped my toe in to see what kind of culture there was here. I chose a simple project and proposed a couple more. But the unwelcoming admin behavior I could observe toward me and other users made it clear to me this would not be a good investment of my time. I have to wonder how many dozens of times this same story has been repeated. I happened to drop in today after many months (wondering if maybe there had been a healing change of some sort here) and found the cases of User:Username_Removed and the present one. It's sad to see so much trouble and friction where there could be synergy with the right vision. Anyway, it was toxic for me to be here, so I should walk away again. Best wishes. Tom Haws (talk) 03:24, 22 August 2021 (UTC)
One by one these intelligent, articulate, and cautious people walk away after being scolded and reverted for trying to help; so much wasted goodwill! User:Username_Removed, User:User6789 Tom Haws (talk) 03:30, 22 August 2021 (UTC)
Thanks, I should have read the whole page before joining. While I appreciated Margotbean's effort and wasn't going to say anything, I feel I should after reading more (here, user talk & contribs, plus page histories & talk pages at special:AllPages using namespace drop-down). For every 1 person calling out bad treatment, vastly more will just leave angry. I agree power is leveraged unfairly. I got approval before tasks, felt encouraged and was immediately reversed, citing new edits "didn’t match" the non-updated pages (yep of course, because those were acknowledged by admin prior as needing updates, no update visible in history for cited page, not possible to do all pages at once). Social whiplash results leaving a horrid taste; hard not to wonder if intended. I read answers to helpful, knowledgeable editors which seem intended to provoke, successfully. Also in agreement the wiki appears like a community project (maybe for the benefit of CA?), though edits are discouraged except for well-connected community people.
Lots of similar social whiplash-like things read. Initial words suggest respect, subsequent actions belie it (I'd be doing a disservice to new contributors if not truthful). I must infer there's no one else to do admin duties, or perhaps the behavior is approved given it is hosted and controlled by the developer. The ones speaking out seem knowledgeable of wikis (saw where one guy who created advanced templates relied on, was prevented from improving and suggested improvements also denied after current admin was elevated post-migration from Chucklefish). Connected maybe, as unappealing as that sounds? Maybe CA will one day read and address the issue, since it is becoming a PR and perhaps a sales problem, but probably not. I'd guess these comments will get archived and new contributors won't see them. I won't be buying future games having to rely on "community" resources run this way, sorry CA. User6789 (talk) 08:37, 22 August 2021 (UTC)
The fact that he got no reply or justification after 2 weeks is a red flag. I reported admin abuse externally. JR8 (talk) 11:27, 22 August 2021 (UTC)
Where externally did you report it? I'd like to follow suit as well. Thanks. User6789 (talk) 21:01, 22 August 2021 (UTC)
I'm reading all of these comments here and although I'm fairly new to this wiki I support all of the complaints listed above. Margotbean deleted one of my fishing templates because "it has inaccurate info" like literally you could just edit it yourself to make it accurate? and then further removed the content from other areas because "the forge isn't a fishing site" even though the lava eel can be caught there??? Margotbean is an extremely good organizer and editor but not good at administering the site. With the way I've seen edits be undone here, had I not had lots of wiki experience prior to joining this one, I probably would've left as well. I was wondering why the wiki was almost dead aside from several occasional contributors when I first joined and this is why to be honest. If new users aren't welcomed here or feel like they belong they'd just leave. Like I would have done if this was my first wiki here. User314159 (talk) 20:30, 23 August 2021 (UTC)
Hello folks! This is ColitoCole. I wanted to address some of these concerns. I know firsthand that those who are involved in maintaining the wiki, the forums, etc. want to encourage communication and goodwill. The challenge is, we're an extremely small team and the amount of people who make up the community is very large. In Margotbean's case, Margotbean is doing a lot but they are just one person with limited time and energy. Often times that means that despite doing their best they can quickly become overwhelmed with needed tasks and "to-do items" by no fault of their own. This can lead to communications that may seem brief or blunt. But I also know that Margotbean has a passion for this wiki. Their job is to make decisions about how the wiki is structured and maintained. I rely on them to help maintain the wiki and to use their best judgement. I ask that you please remember these decisions can be difficult and should be respected as much as possible.
By posting on the wiki you recognize that your work may be "mercilessly edited and redistributed at will". You are absolutely free to ask questions to administrators, as you would of anyone who contested your edits. Just please remember there may not always be time to explain every decision.
That being said, if you have discussed something with Margotbean and feel unable to come to a solution, I invite you to email me directly. I'll do my best to work things out. cole.medeiros (at) stardewvalley (dot) net ColitoCole (talk) 21:56, 23 August 2021 (UTC)
Do you mind stating which policies Horizon98 violated that let to a ban? This was the initial question, which he and others never got an answer to. You also mention that there are problems because of such a small team and Margotbean mentioned there are no patrollers besides herself but looking around at some profiles of other heavy-duty editors, most of which Margotbean herself purposefully drove away, I have seen plenty of people who did the roles of translator and patroller without the wiki assigning them those roles. The lack of role filling seems to be a deliberate choice by the current administration. JR8 (talk) 22:21, 23 August 2021 (UTC)
The details of any specific ban are private, and will not be discussed here. No legitimate editor has or will ever be banned without warning, message, or discussion with the editor. Please direct further questions to Cole's talk page or the email address given above. margotbean (talk) 23:38, 23 August 2021 (UTC)
I didn't ask about the details, even so: the details aren't private, they are openly visible for everyone to see on the wiki, since you didn't communicate with Horizon in private. I asked for which specific wiki policy was violated - the ban reason is 'Violation of wiki policy'. The wiki policy is not private, it needs to be public. So what you are saying is that he did not repeatedly violate a wiki policy, otherwise you could easily link or quote to which policy was violated. The banned user himself asked you what he violated and you didn't answer him, neither in public nor in private. The fact remains that you state bogus ban reasons, and when asked about policy you say it's private. How does that even make sense? You are a terrible, power-tripping moderator. Don't complain about workload with your behaviour when you ban or drive away the very people who reduce that workload because of some weird power-tripping ego-issues JR8 (talk) 23:50, 23 August 2021 (UTC)
I can see from people's comments reviewed that this is often not their first wiki editing experience. Tom Haws is a Wikipedia administrator for crying out loud (see his user page links). I'm not new to editing (non-fandom/gamepedia) wikis, and I find the admin behavior here poor. I see Margotbean disallowing things that appear to stem from a lack of MW knowledge. I see other's comments on this also, as well as missing wiki features that would invalidate the excuses. Excuses or not, there are ways to treat people that are respectful, and ways that aren't. Telling someone they can do something to turn around and reverse that very thing is not respectful. Being short on staff or time is not a valid excuse, the behavior is why the team doesn't expand. Thank you Cole, for at least confirming that the poor behavior appears to be condoned, because at least this lets people know not to waste their time. I'd ask that this section of the conversation is never archived please.
For a lot of gamers, contributing to a community's resources is half of the fun of gaming (this includes programmers and software engineers). Also, having a lack of proper policies and guidance is part of the problem (I see someone recently vandalized to this point, which I do not condone, but can certainly understand the impulse). Without robust policy documentation, Margotbean does make up the rules as she goes (to agree with the few lines I could read in the vandalism deletion summary--but stop please, vandalism is not the way to handle that). Margotbean also does not appear to treat all users the same. Further, bots are allowed on most wikis for a reason (you have no policy stating people can't, and anyone can edit via the MW API without you ever realizing they're using a bot, as long as it is well throttled). The ability to disable the edit API no longer exists in MW. The banned editor's real mistake was simply informing Margotbean of what she was ignorant to (she never would have known otherwise, if the user kept doing small throttled updates). Banning out of a lack of either knowledge or policies looks punitive, no matter how you slice it. The way things are done here is backwards (the Wikipedia Admin and other's spotted it quickly). Hopefully the other users who complained come back one day, if only to see they made the right choice. You have multiple different users here all saying similar things, which should tell you something. Conversation in private just allows the poor behavior to continue. User6789 (talk) 01:18, 25 August 2021 (UTC)
Thanks for all the replies or talks above ; ) Actually, I have never talked with Margotbean privately. All of the talks between Margotbean and me are on the (Chinese or English) wiki and in public. After the ban, I wrote an email to ConcernedApe (CA) and [email protected] to ask for help. Then a few days later, Cole sent an email to me and told me that CA asked him to handle the issue. There are several emails between Cole and me. There's no final judgement until now and we are still communicating about it. But I'm asking for Cole's permission to open those emails. Once I get permitted, I'll post them here. Thanks for all people's help. --Horizon98 (Discussion) 05:09, 25 August 2021 (UTC)
Hey Horizon98, I am writing you an email back now to respond to your last message. I appreciate the context and the conversation. We'll figure something out. You are welcome to post my email to you if you like, but please post it to your own Talk Page and not here. I'd like to ask that this thread be closed and any new issues are brought up in new threads. Also I'd like to ask everyone to please be polite. I promise to do my best to listen to and resolve issues that are brought up in thoughtful ways. ColitoCole (talk) 19:10, 25 August 2021 (UTC)
Since I got approval from Cole, I have posted the emails on my talk page to make the conversation in public. --Horizon98 (Discussion) 02:17, 26 August 2021 (UTC)
Wow, thank you for posting User:Horizon98 and Cole for the permission to. I'm just adding my thanks to everyone who contributed to the conversation before closing (I was surprised, I think I counted 7 users and 2 admins?). I just wanted to say it was a helpful read, particularly the elaboration on rules and actions posted on Horizon's user page. Thanks!Username_Removed (talk) 12:38, 26 August 2021 (UTC)
Apologies, I forgot to add here why I'm requesting account deletion (in addition to the spoiler reversals in my contrib history that did 100% follow written wiki policy) I ran into problems at: Talk:Dyeing. I look forward to seeing if written policy is upheld. Username_Removed (talk) 21:06, 26 August 2021 (UTC)

Uploaded Wrong File

Hi Margot, I tried uploading a file for the French Page of the Festival of Ice and accidentally uploaded the wrong file twice (Festival of Ice Mail FR.png). Now It doesn't let me modify it since it apparently already "exists", and I assume only admins can delete those files. Can you enlighten me about this issue? Aefka (talk) 20:56, 11 August 2021 (UTC)

Hi Aefka! Are you able to "Upload a new version of this file" on the file page? If the title of the image is correct, that's all you need to do, upload a new version. Is the wiki not letting you upload?
Keep in mind that when you upload a new version of the image, it won't show up correctly for 5 hours (or less). This is a known problem, that we cannot yet fix. By tomorrow it will show correctly on its own.
If you need me to delete the image entirely so you can try again, let me know, please! margotbean (talk) 21:30, 11 August 2021 (UTC)
It did update the file after some time, thanks for the explanation! Aefka (talk) 08:56, 12 August 2021 (UTC)

Fishing Mechanics different on Switch?

Hey Margotbean,

Have you heard anything about the fishing mechanics being different on the Switch? I caught the following fish on the Switch version:

Anchovy, Normal Quality, Not Perfect, No Treasure Chest: +13xp Herring, Gold Quality, Perfect, No Treasure Chest: +40xp Anchovy, Normal Quality, Not Perfect, No Treasure Chest: +13xp Sardine, Normal Quality, Not Perfect, No Treasure Chest: +13xp Trash/Junk: +3xp Trash/Junk: +3xp Halibut, Normal Quality, Not Perfect, No Treasure Chest: +19xp

Total: (13 + 40 + 13 + 13 + 3 + 3 + 19) = 104xp.

According to everything in the wiki and the game code I decompiled, I should be level 1 Fishing. However, the skills screen in-game still shows me at level 0.

All I can guess is that the Switch mechanics are slightly different. Have you heard anything about this? Kn0wmad1c (talk) 15:23, 15 August 2021 (UTC)

No, I haven't heard anything about this bug. Did you level up overnight? Even if you did, it would probably be good to report this on the official forums. Good luck! margotbean (talk) 17:17, 15 August 2021 (UTC)
If you checked your fishing level on the day before leveling up this isn't a bug because the skills tab updates overnight (or not?). When you check now again, does it say lvl 0 or 1 now? Botautal (talk) 22:10, 15 August 2021 (UTC)

I found out the issue was that I was calculating on the quality of the fish that was fished up, but on a perfect catch, the quality is upgraded and the formula for XP gain uses the original quality, not the upgraded quality.

The real amount of XP should have been 97, since my Gold Quality Perfect Herring should have been worth 33XP instead of 40XP.

I've made an edit to the Experience Points section of Fishing to clarify this. Kn0wmad1c (talk) 23:30, 15 August 2021 (UTC)

Sorry for my flub about Deluxe Speed-Gro. I actually thought I was editing Deluxe Fertilizer. I blame my fevered brain at the time. We've had heat extremes at 40 Celsius coupled with poisonous smoke from forest fires burning literally hundreds of thousands of acres. Our usually mild climate normally requires no air conditioning, but people have died here of the heat alone. I thought I was coping, but it's clear I was more woozy than I had thought. Diminished awareness is a symptom of the onset of danger. Alarming as that is, I am thankful for your simple correction. It has had benefit to me beyond your intent. I just thought you might like to know that, and wanted to say thanks. Giles (talk) 03:00, 19 August 2021 (UTC)

No need to apologize, but do keep yourself safe, Giles! I'd rather give you an AC unit with HEPA filter, but if correcting an edit was helpful, then I'm glad. Please stay safe! margotbean (talk) 17:37, 19 August 2021 (UTC)
Thanks for the well-wishes! I have filters, but standard AC is incompatible with my dwelling, and alternatives are very costly. I live at 45.5 degrees north in a fertile land of farms, forests, and rivers where maximum norms at the peak of summer are 28 Celsius. AC is/has been simply an unnecessary luxury here. Early this year, though, a monster heat wave broke all-time record heat by 5 Celsius, hitting a whopping 46.7 Celsius. Thought I was living in the Arabian desert! This one was less high but longer. I thought I had it under control better than I did. Now I'm better aware. I'd send a cautionary note to anyone reading this about how tricksy heat waves can be. Giles (talk) 20:47, 21 August 2021 (UTC)

Monster Drops AIO

Hi margotbean, I always wanted to have all monster drops in one single page as it helps me to decide where I would want to be on a day. I thought it might be helpful to others as well so I tried to create "Monster Drops" but since I am new user here, I can't. I have a sample of what I would like it to look like if you would like to take a glance. HPop (talk) 21:07, 19 August 2021 (UTC)

I can see the edit in the abuse log; it looks a lot like something that would be a good candidate for your user page. Create a page like "User:HPop/Monster Drops" and then make the edits in smaller increments, saving in-between. margotbean (talk) 17:57, 20 August 2021 (UTC)
Thank you, that seems about right and when I finished it, I'll let you know to see if it's valuable as public page or not. HPop (talk) 18:47, 20 August 2021 (UTC)

A hello, and question about English writing convention

Hello Margotbean! This wiki is fantastic, thank you for all your hard work!

My question relates to proper English writing convention and if this is to be followed on this wiki. I notice many sentence fragments, for which the reason for fragmentation is unclear. Some of these are a fragment of 3-4 words. I have fixed some, and some other punctuation and grammar issues, but I now see there are many more and want to make sure that proper English writing convention is the norm here as elsewhere before continuing on the English wiki. I checked the editing page though it does not provide much clarification other than "encyclopedic" style (which does frown on sentence fragments and also instances of addressing the reader informally with such statements as "you", preferring a more neutral tone). Am I interpreting this wiki's definition of "encyclopedic" and "formal tone" correctly? If so, I'm happy to go through all pages and remedy these instances. Thank you for your assistance! User6789 (talk) 17:42, 21 August 2021 (UTC)

Wow, kind words! Thank you very much! You are interpreting "encyclopedic" and "formal tone" correctly; the wiki should not use "you" and shouldn't have sentence fragments. The problem is that there are thousands of pages in 12 languages, and only me to patrol them. So, yes, have fun and fix what you like! The only caveat I have is that all similar pages should read the same, even if the wording is clunky. So, if you change one fish's page, you should really check all fish pages for consistency. ...A tall order in some cases. Thank you for making the wiki better, and have fun! margotbean (talk) 17:52, 21 August 2021 (UTC)
That is fantastic, thank you. It may take me a little while to go through every page to ensure no more sentence fragments or informal language, but I will happily take this on (apologies in advance for the patrolling work it causes). Cheers User6789 (talk) 18:04, 21 August 2021 (UTC)
Hi again Margotbean, we just talked about fixing sentence fragments, it will take some time to get all pages of the same type to be consistent. I can't feasibly edit all pages at a single time to make them consistent, there's going to need to be some time elapsed between pages where some are not yet updated (editng and considering convention when there are no rules set or posted anyhwere takes time). I see some I have been doing have been reversed with the message "Again, a good change that doesn't match the Iron Lamp-post," (which it won't because Iron Lamp-post has not yet been edited). As I mentioned, I intend to go through all pages, but that's going to take some time, during which things won't match. Furthermore, items with differing amounts of information sometimes require information to be broken up slightly differently. As with any writing, the amount of information present affects how the information is divided. I'm not going through them per item type, I'm going reverse alphabetical using the All Pages tool. Sometimes, a bit of flexibility is required in addressing fragments.
At this point I think it may be better for me to revers all changes I've made to now and let you guys just do your usual thing. Best of luck! User6789 (talk) 23:27, 21 August 2021 (UTC)

Warp Totems

I'm pretty new to the game in general, but I was reading on the Warp Totems (general) page, that usinga Beach Totem will consume the totem but not warp the protagonist. Last night was the Jelly festival year 2 for me, and I was in the mines getting killed. I warped exactly at "10:00 PM" and it saved my character and the festival event started like it did in year 1 - I got to talk to everyone as though I walked in. I'm still really new, and there are no festivals in the mountains to test the theory that warping in at the designated times works. Sorry, I'm still learning, but thought that more experienced players would know better how to test something that worked for me before I knew it shouldn't have. Thanks for all your hard work! Lyssa Lyssabelle1977 (talk) 21:26, 23 August 2021 (UTC)

Hello Lyssa! I'm not sure I understand your question -- did the warp totem get consumed? It's true, there is nothing on the general Warp Totem page about exceptions to the rules. In fact, there's nothing on the Warp Totem: Beach page about festivals either. Let me see about fixing that. Normally the warp totem would be consumed (before 10pm) but the player wouldn't be teleported anywhere. That may have changed with v1.5. I will do some testing. Thanks for the kind words! margotbean (talk) 23:44, 23 August 2021 (UTC)
I've updated both the Warp Totem and Warp Totem: Beach pages to better reflect the totem's behavior on festival days. Please let me know if additional clarifications are needed. Thanks so much for bringing this up! margotbean (talk) 18:06, 26 August 2021 (UTC)

"Coat of many colors"

I was wondering if you would like me and a friend to add links to all items that can be used for dyeing for Emily's and Haley's names and a link to their house page? Because I'm free tommorow to do it with my buddy. Fnaticlyric560 (talk) 21:47, 4 September 2021 (UTC)

Sure thing, that would be nice! Have fun! margotbean (talk) 22:37, 4 September 2021 (UTC)
I have resumed my project, but I have a question about the Fairy Rose, because it comes in many colors, and I don't know if it can be used as multiple dye colors. Do you know? Because I would like to keep wiki containing only accurate info. Thanks! Fnaticlyric560 (talk) 19:03, 7 September 2021 (UTC)
All colors of Fairy Rose go into the red dye pot. (This may be an odd choice for ConcernedApe to make, since Fairy Roses are never red, but he did so anyway.) Hope this helps! margotbean (talk) 19:09, 7 September 2021 (UTC)
Thanks! that helps a lot! Fnaticlyric560 (talk) 19:28, 7 September 2021 (UTC)
do you mind if I also add a note to the Fairy Rose page talking about the fact that there is no true red variation of the Fairy Rose, but it goes into the red pot anyway? Fnaticlyric560 (talk) 19:41, 7 September 2021 (UTC)
And Now I have run into the exact same problem like the fairy rose: slime eggs. they come in many colors, but do all go into the red? Fnaticlyric560 (talk) 01:43, 8 September 2021 (UTC)
Status update: I have finished the 'red' section of dyeing! (Oh god, so many more to go...) Fnaticlyric560 (talk) 17:32, 8 September 2021 (UTC)
I can relate to that sentiment! To answer your question, slime eggs of different colors go into different dye pots. If you can, hit Ctrl+F on the page and search for "slime egg". You can see that the different colors are in different sections of the table. Green slime eggs go in the green dye pot, blue eggs go in the blue pot, red eggs go in red, purple eggs go in purple, and tiger slime eggs go in the orange pot.
Before you ask, all colors of Tulip go into the red dye pot, all colors of Summer Spangle go into the yellow dye pot, and all colors of Poppy go into the orange dye pot. I have checked in-game to make sure!
You're doing great, thanks for all your hard work! If you have more questions, please don't be afraid to ask. Thank you, margotbean (talk) 17:41, 8 September 2021 (UTC)
Much appreciated! User:User314159 offered to help me, so I do not deserve all of the credit! Fnaticlyric560 (talk) 14:29, 9 September 2021 (UTC)
IT IS DONE! (oh thank god) With a combination of help from User:User314159 and User:Horizon98 with his bot, we were able to add everything I wanted to! Kudos to them! Fnaticlyric560 (talk) 19:56, 10 September 2021 (UTC)
While I'm at it, do you have anything else needed to be done for the wiki? Fnaticlyric560 (talk) 19:59, 10 September 2021 (UTC)
I took a quick look at my "to do" list, and everything is either related to the other languages, or involves in-game testing, so nothing at the moment. But, I will let you know right away if there's another project, so you can decide if you'd like to help out. Thank you so much!! margotbean (talk) 20:17, 10 September 2021 (UTC)

Game Code

I have noticed that many pages on the wiki provide references and links to the game code, but none of them actually send the reader to the exact game code where they can see everything for themselves. I am wondering if you have a link or instructions on how to access the vanilla game code (without mods), which might be useful when fact checking or adding information to the wiki. Thanks! User314159 (talk) 16:36, 5 September 2021 (UTC)

Yep, you can find instructions at Modding:Modder Guide/Get Started#How do I decompile the game code? --margotbean (talk) 18:25, 5 September 2021 (UTC)

Re: Clam

Hi Margotbean! The reverting changes do make sense since whether or not Clam is a fish is confusing (in fact, I actually figured it would be confusing when I made the changes, especially since whoever made the fish template thought Clam was a fish). However, since the game gives many features of Clam that make it not a fish (cannot be in Fish ponds, cannot be used in Fish recipes, do not count towards the Fish collections, etc.), I still think Clams should be taken off of all fish categories and labels for the sake of matching the wiki to the vanilla game. You mentioned that one of the reasons for the revert was because the wikis in the other languages would still consider Clam as a fish, so whatever I did would make it so the English wiki wouldn't match with the wikis in other languages. I am wondering if you could point me to the main curators of the wikis of other languages so I could discuss this with them in some manner. Regardless, since whether or not Clam is a fish will be confusing to some extent anyways, it's not a big deal if it doesn't get changed. User314159 (talk) 15:44, 6 September 2021 (UTC)

Well, there's just me as curator of all the wikis, so I can't point you to anyone else. That's part of the reason for not making the changes; I would have to make the cascading changes in the other languages. Best regards, margotbean (talk) 18:35, 6 September 2021 (UTC)

So I've been playing stardewvalley since 2017 and I did on Playstation. Now i only play on my phone but I haven't get the extension for the island. And i was wondering if you know if thats not avaliable yet for phones? Thank you ♡ AndreaKB (talk) 04:01, 7 September 2021 (UTC)

Yes, unfortunately the mobile version update to 1.5 has not yet been released. ConcernedApe tweeted saying he had to change porting companies, so the release would take longer than expected. We're all anxiously waiting. Best wishes, margotbean (talk) 18:58, 7 September 2021 (UTC)

Thank you so much for the info and your time ♡ be safe AndreaKB (talk) 06:07, 8 September 2021 (UTC)

Bug Steak

I Apologize for changing the fish season and i hope it didn't confuse any players I also have a question does the new recipes of 1.5 like bug meat count in the 100% completion since i don't have the recipe and i can't obtain it since i already hit lvl 1 combat in the earlier versions Dr.heinz doofensmirtz (talk) 02:14, 14 September 2021 (UTC)

If you are playing on mobile, you don't need the recipe; otherwise you should already have the recipe in your list when starting the game. If you don't, please report the bug on the official forums. margotbean (talk) 16:29, 14 September 2021 (UTC)

A question about the wiki(s)

Hello again, margotbean! I have a few questions I would like to ask, but I am not sure if it needs to be private (at least, some of it) The questions range from: why did we stop using the "old" wiki? To: did you become an admin\whats your story? I wanted to see if it needed to be private before I ask any questions. Thanks! Fnaticlyric560 (talk) 22:09, 16 September 2021 (UTC)

The "old" wiki was hosted by Chucklefish, the company that used to publish the game. ConcernedApe took over publishing and the wiki, so it got a new url. I became a moderator on the old wiki because I did so much work on it. I learned mediawiki syntax and worked on unfinished templates. When the game was translated into 5 languages, I was the most familiar with the wiki, so I helped transition that change. Then the other languages came, and I helped with that. By the time the wiki changed hands, I was the most familiar with it, so I was asked to be the admin. tl;dr: a lot of hard work. :D margotbean (talk) 23:00, 16 September 2021 (UTC)
Oh. Good lord that's a hell of a backstory. One more question: any projects needed to be done on the english wiki? (Or others. I am very fluent in google translate) Fnaticlyric560 (talk) 18:25, 17 September 2021 (UTC)
I'll be sure to let you know if something comes up! margotbean (talk) 18:22, 18 September 2021 (UTC)

Uuh what happened?

So I was looking at my watchlist to see if you had said anything about a project that I could maybe help with, and instead saw something about a new section called -I hate you- created by a new editor called starwiki? Did something happen? I saw it was deleted (I can assume why). You don't have to tell me, if you want to keep it private, I just want to know if you are alright. :l Fnaticlyric560 (talk) 00:11, 23 September 2021 (UTC)

Pots lost

So I was playing on PlayStation 4 and found a big bug where i finished the pantry room, but I've waited a week to have Mrs. Mullner come to give me the recipe for the garden pot, but it never happened. If anyone has any info how to fix this bug, plz help me. I even double checked the parameters (6:00 to 11:30, not a rainy day) and still doesn't work for some reason. Plz help. Errant edits

I apologize for removing what I thought were wrongly piped links and changing the sort. I thought it would make more sense the other way. Sorry you had to remove them Zombiewizard45 (talk) 18:44, 27 September 2021 (UTC)

You're very kind to apologize, but it's quite alright! Best wishes to you, margotbean (talk) 15:38, 28 September 2021 (UTC)

Furniture Catalog

I see and half understand why you removed the categorization that was done on the Furniture Catalog page, but I don't understand why you removed it all. Sure, removing the fine-grained details made sense, but what's wrong with having the sub-categories ("Events", "Specific stores", etc)? -Emky (talk) 14:53, 28 September 2021 (UTC)

I don't know if there's anything wrong with it, it was a design decision to make the list as compact as possible. margotbean (talk) 15:38, 28 September 2021 (UTC)

My big fat stardew wedding

I was falling down a rabbit hole of wikilinks yesterday, when I came across a page talking about marriage, and somewhere on the page, it said something along the lines about 'reaching a level of ten hearts with the mermaid'? I reread it and it said the same thing. It threw me off, and before I could fix it, my device died! I got the chance to fix it again today, but now I can't find the page. I remember being on the lost books page at one point, but that's it. can you or anyone help me? Fnaticlyric560 (talk) 20:56, 29 September 2021 (UTC)

Sorry, I searched for "mermaid" (capitalized and lower-case) and didn't find any text matching that on the wiki. margotbean (talk) 12:48, 30 September 2021 (UTC)
I will try going to pages related to marriage and use the what links here tool to try and find that dang elusive page. thanks for trying! :p Fnaticlyric560 (talk) 15:07, 30 September 2021 (UTC)
Status update: I found a user page called User:gp54 that has no talk page (or no talkheader, for that matter.)and the page itself has nothing but a copy of Harvey's page. do I just leave it? Fnaticlyric560 (talk) 17:30, 30 September 2021 (UTC)
Status update: I give up. After almost a week of scouring the wiki, I cannot find the elusive page. I wonder if I just misread something, because at the time of me reading the mystery page, It was 10:00 pm mountain time, and I was very tired. Thanks for helping me along that wild goose chase! Fnaticlyric560 (talk) 15:30, 5 October 2021 (UTC)
I dont know if you were skimming and scanning or if you read it properly, but basically:

If you get a boyfriend/girlfriend to 10 hearts, you can propose to them using a mermaid's pendant. This can be collected at the right side of the beach ona rainy day for 5000 gold. Talk to the man who appears near the top right and buy it. When you give it to a 10 heart boyfriend/girlfriend they will accept (if you atleast have upgraded the house once). In 3 days ehen you wake up, the wedding ceremony is shown as a cutscene. Hope this helps :P Nikodem123fort (talk) 21:36, 17 October 2021 (UTC)

My big fat stardew wedding 2

I was looking for the mystery page (described in My big fat stardew wedding) when I noticed that all pages that say something about marriage say nothing about if you get the spouse farmhouse addition when you marry a farmhand, and because I have not been married to another farmhand, I do not know the answer to the question myself. Do you know? Fnaticlyric560 (talk) 20:56, 29 September 2021 (UTC)

There is no room added to the farmhouse or to a cabin when marrying a farmhand. margotbean (talk) 12:48, 30 September 2021 (UTC)

OK, thank you! :) Fnaticlyric560 (talk) 15:05, 30 September 2021 (UTC)

I apologise for getting some of the trivia confused or clumsy wording to the page (Keg - diff), but I still agree with the main gist of the edits. First, I might have used the wrong terminology, but "drink" is a term used quite frequently on the wiki (eg Green Tea and Coffee, two of the products in question, but also on Buffs, Speed, and finally on Ginger Ale). Secondly, one certainly encounters fruit juice at the grocery store a lot more than fruit wine (which is the product actually produced in-game), and I think that's trivia worth pointing out. Let me know if you think it would be worth working on that a bit more towards a proposed edit or if you think it still doesn't belong on the page.Techhead7890 (talk) 22:18, 2 October 2021 (UTC)

You're very kind to apologize, but it's not necessary! I think the problem is, I did't know what the actual point of the trivia was. The keg ferments fruit but not veg (other than wheat & hops)? I suppose technically, the keg should produce fermented everything or nothing. Was that the main point? Please advise, margotbean (talk) 13:36, 3 October 2021 (UTC)
No worries, looking back on it, it was confusing anyway! So there are two things: 1) In the intro, add "used to make drinkable Artisan Goods" -- this may be overly specific, but I feel like it does provide more detail than "artisan goods," while avoiding the problem of "fermentable" which as you point out gets needlessly confusing. 2) Regarding the trivia, I think it I would reword it to "The Keg always produces fruit wines, and can never produce fruit juices. This is despite fruit juices being more common in real life." It's entirely possible that the trivia better belongs on another page, such as the Juice page itself (eg "Fruit juices do not exist in game. Any fruit placed in a Keg will become fruit wine instead of fruit juice."). But I'll wait and have a think about it to gather information before deciding how to proceed. Techhead7890 (talk) 01:02, 6 October 2021 (UTC)

Thanks for fixing my mistake with the void salmon-void mayo bug warning. Also, is there a page or something that has a list of all the pages that need to be updated to include the warning? Thanks in advance! Fnaticlyric560 (talk) 17:27, 9 October 2021 (UTC)

I think I got them all. I searched for all pages that use File:Poison.png. Just make sure the wording is correct, and that all required conditions for triggering the bug are there, ok? :) margotbean (talk) 20:14, 9 October 2021 (UTC)

Aye-Aye, captain! Fnaticlyric560 (talk) 20:20, 9 October 2021 (UTC)

Helpfulness squared

Hello Margotbean. I have been trying to think of ways to be even more productive on the wiki, and remembered how helpful User:Horizon98's bot was during my latest project, 'Coat of many colors'. And I wondered if there was a way to get/code my own. I am asking you about this because I am not sure if I need permission or something to do this. Thanks! Fnaticlyric560 (talk) 17:36, 11 October 2021 (UTC)

You can always code a bot account if you wish. You can make a separate account for "bot" edits and regular edits as well, if you like. On the old wiki, bot accounts had their edits marked as patrolled automatically, but this is not the case on the new wiki, so there's not much point in designating an account as a "bot" account on the server side anymore. If you do make a separate "bot" account, it will have to make a certain number of edits before it can bypass the abuse filters, but that's the only difference. margotbean (talk) 19:18, 11 October 2021 (UTC)

Good to know! I asked Horizon98 how they did theirs, and they showed me the ropes. Right now I am a little busy, so I will start working on the bot tonight. Thanks! :) Fnaticlyric560 (talk) 19:46, 11 October 2021 (UTC)

Status Update: I have created the bot account! I am going through the mediawiki guidebook that Horizon98 sent me the link to so that I can figure out how to use it. Question: Isn't there a way to get a sandbox-sorta-thing on the wiki? I would like to try and test the bot out somewhere safe first before I risk messing up the wiki. Thanks for your help! Fnaticlyric560 (talk) 20:58, 11 October 2021 (UTC)
Congratulations! Unfortunately, there is no sandbox area, so you must use caution when implementing bot changes. margotbean (talk) 14:05, 12 October 2021 (UTC)

Stonefish, Ice Pip, Lava Eel

Hello! The game code seems to suggest that there is a fishing level requirement to hook the stonefish, ice pip, and lava eel. Looking through those pages' version histories it seems like they were originally there but removed later after some discussion on the talk pages, but there is nothing there. Do you know about those and can you confirm or not if there actually is a fishing level requirement for those fish? User314159 (talk) 00:02, 12 October 2021 (UTC)

Good question! The relevant dissussion is on the old wiki's Ice Pip talk page, at The short answer is "no", the value in Fish.xnb gets overridden by game code. I will copy the discussion to the current Ice Pip's talk page, for convenience. margotbean (talk) 14:05, 12 October 2021 (UTC)

Xbox multiplayer: pausing time

I found that it’s possible to pause time in split-screen multiplayer if both players are in doing an action that pauses time during single player. If one player is in a cut scene and the other player opens a chest or goes into their inventory menu, time will stop. Mochii (talk) 11:54, 13 October 2021 (UTC)

Hi Mochii! That info is already on the multiplayer page, under "Time", but thanks for your vigilance! margotbean (talk) 14:52, 13 October 2021 (UTC)

Yeah, I have played on local multiplayer on every possible platform, and discovered that a while ago. Good job though! Fnaticlyric560 (talk) 14:59, 13 October 2021 (UTC)

Bugs was deleted, why? Also are you allowed to make another bugs page or will you get banned? Nikodem123fort (talk) 21:27, 17 October 2021 (UTC)

You won't get banned, but the page will be deleted. There are too many bugs on too many pages, and they change with each release, so it's better if they appear on the pages they relate to. margotbean (talk) 22:46, 17 October 2021 (UTC)

Ok! Nikodem123fort (talk) 23:15, 17 October 2021 (UTC)

Neutral days not so neutral

So I went in the mines on a neutral day to find amethyst so i could force feed Abigail and make her my wife *ahem*. Anyway, i went to floor 20 and went down the ladder. Standing a few tiles away from me was a diamond node, and close to it was a jade node. I then found the ladder 3 rocks later, and when i went down there was a randomly generated ladder on the tile infront of me, i didnt even have to break open any rocks! This doesnt seem neutral, i think that Welwick's oracle was wrong Nikodem123fort (talk) 22:19, 17 October 2021 (UTC)

There are multiple debates about the impact (or lack of impact) of luck on events where RNG is involved. It's entirely possible to have what seems like a lucky day regardless of the daily luck value. margotbean (talk) 22:46, 17 October 2021 (UTC)

Ok, thanks for letting me know Nikodem123fort (talk) 23:14, 17 October 2021 (UTC)

Expensive rock

So it was a normal stardew valley day, i was going to the secret woods to break some stumps and get hardwood. When i went back, I decided to go to the travelling merchant and buy something. The first thing I see: Rock x1 - 600g

Like literally there was a rock next to me that i could easily break with my iridium pickaxe, but he was selling one for 600g?!?! Well i bought it, and left cindersap forest. Nikodem123fort (talk) 07:06, 18 October 2021 (UTC)

Well well well, in a sense that's a privilege of not being native English speaker: you master at least one other language...! But your French seemed very good tho. -- Charly (talk) 00:54, 19 November 2021 (UTC)
Thank you, that is kind of you to say. I studied French in high school and college, but never got truly fluent in it. It is a beautiful language, though. margotbean (talk) 01:59, 19 November 2021 (UTC)

About the 'bug' on the island farmhouse page

According to that page, if you sleep in the island farmhouse and quit the game, you will wake up on the mainland. I tested this and this didnt happen. Either the bug got fixed at some point or its specific to a a platform. I cant tell though, I only have the game on switch. Since i noticed you were the person who added the bug i thought it was appropriate to ask you, does it still happen? I thought about removing it, since more than likely its fixed, but i just wanted to double check Nobody (talk) 22:57, 30 November 2021 (UTC)

I just tested with the Steam version (1.5.4) and it definitely got fixed. I don't know when, but I would say it's fine to just remove the bug from the page. Thanks! margotbean (talk) 23:08, 30 November 2021 (UTC)
Also, you can remove the category "Bugs tested in 1.5"! :) Thanks again, margotbean (talk) 23:10, 30 November 2021 (UTC)~

Skull Cavern Levels

Hi! So I posted about it in the summaries as well but I do not think the Quarry Mine is at floor 77377 of the skull cavern. Because in the game code, the first 120 levels correlate to the levels in the mines in the mountains, and then floor 121 becomes floor 1 of the skull cavern (hence why there used to a bug that people such as dangerouslyfunny found where you could find a ladder from floor 120 of the mines to floor 1 of the skull cavern). So you cant take the numbers at face value; you have to subtract 120 from them because of how the game code parses levels. User314159 (talk) 02:08, 29 December 2021 (UTC)

Hello Pi! The problem I have with that statement is the "I do not think" part. Neither of us is 100% sure, but those familiar with the code know that 77377 is the Quarry Mine number. So I think it might be better to use that until one of us is sure. Either that, or explain how 77257 is derived. When I first looked at it, I thought it was simply a typo. Happy Holidays to you, margotbean (talk) 15:17, 29 December 2021 (UTC)
I think I explained enough times how it got derived (by subtracting mine levels by 120 to get skull cavern levels), so if it's not convincing enough then it should probably be kept in its original state. I'm still pretty sure it's at 77257 instead of 77377, I just have not gotten far enough in the game to verify that. User314159 (talk) 15:36, 29 December 2021 (UTC)
77257 is correct. You can use console commands to warp to 77256, and going down a ladder puts you in the quarry mines. BlaDe (talk) 18:44, 29 December 2021 (UTC)
Can confirm. Installed a mod to get me down 77k+ levels and that's where the quarry mines were. Margotbean if you have time you might want to confirm this yourself as well. User314159 (talk) 23:17, 29 December 2021 (UTC)
Thanks for verifying that! Updated page. margotbean (talk) 14:07, 30 December 2021 (UTC)
